But if you don\u2019t know how to cope with them, they can wreak havoc on much more than your productivity at work.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EA recent Be Well seminar, hosted by the Office of Human Resources, focused on providing Georgia Tech faculty and staff with strategies to manage stress at work. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAccording to the interactive presentation, which featured members of Kaiser Permanente\u2019s Educational Theatre Program (learn more at \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.etpga.org\u0022 title=\u0022www.etpga.org\u0022\u003Ewww.etpga.org\u003C\/a\u003E), symptoms of stress include muscle tension, insomnia, upset stomach, headaches, sadness, and increased blood pressure. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnd if you don\u2019t deal with stress, it can lead to depression and can aggravate existing health conditions including diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and asthma. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThrough the skits, which highlighted various stressful work situations, the Kaiser team shared the following strategies for keeping stress under control:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDon\u2019t keep it bottled up inside.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWork smarter, not harder.\u003C\/strong\u003E For example, if you\u2019re crunched for time, and faxing a form will work just as well as hand-delivering it \u2014 fax it.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESet realistic expectations.\u003C\/strong\u003E If someone is asking you for help, don\u2019t say you\u2019ll get back to them in five minutes if it\u2019s really going to take you an hour. Remember that it\u2019s also OK to say \u201cno.\u201d\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEmbrace progress, not perfection.\u003C\/strong\u003E See mistakes as an opportunity to grow.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECommunicate.\u003C\/strong\u003E The earlier you can communicate, for example, needing time off from work or a certain number of copies for a meeting, the better.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EReframe.\u003C\/strong\u003E Step back and take a deep breath. Deal with your stressors, but don\u2019t just have a ranting vent session.
