For the 2024-25 academic year, Georgia Tech sent 2,576 students abroad, marking a 9.5% increase from the previous year and setting an Institute record for student participation in international programs.

“Student success is at the heart of our mission, and this new enrollment record underscores the collaborative efforts of the Institute to promote global learning,” said Lorie Johns Páulez, director of Education Abroad.

Today, Georgia Tech runs more than 125 programs in more than 50 countries, which contribute to 47% of all Georgia Tech undergraduates having an international experience by the time they graduate. An array of programs supports global learning, including the First-Year Semester Abroad, Global Research and Internship programs, Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs, Georgia Tech-Europe, and exchange programs with international partner institutions.

“Global learning experiences prepare Georgia Tech students to adapt, communicate across cultures, and approach complex problems with resilience,” said Bernard Kippelen, vice provost of International Initiatives. “These experiences empower them to use technology in ways that advance the human condition and prepare them to be leaders.”

On June 30 in Metz, Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera joined Metz Mayor François Grosdidier and regional leaders to celebrate Georgia Tech-Europe’s role as a hub for international learning and collaboration and to announce plans to expand capacity to serve more students. The City of Metz announced the generous transfer of the property currently occupied to Georgia Tech-Europe for the sale of 1 euro. The event highlighted the enduring partnership between Georgia Tech and the City of Metz, as well as the program’s importance to both the Institute’s strategic plan and the transatlantic relationship between France and the United States. 

As part of the June commemoration, Georgia Tech signed new Memorandums of Understanding with the University of North Georgia and Universidad Pontificia Comillas to enable more students to study at Georgia Tech-Europe. This collaboration opens doors for more students across the University System of Georgia to benefit from international learning experiences in Metz.

Then, on Aug. 27, Georgia Tech-Europe brought together Georgia Tech students, faculty, and local partners to honor the past and look toward the future. 

“This anniversary is not only a chance to celebrate what Georgia Tech-Europe has accomplished over the past 35 years, but also to build on that foundation,” said Cabrera. “Thousands of Georgia Tech students have grown as global leaders here, and we’re committed to expanding those opportunities to many more.” 

Founded in 1990, Georgia Tech-Europe (previously known as Georgia Tech-Lorraine) has become the flagship of the Institute’s international initiatives and a vital part of its strategic plan. Since its opening, more than 13,000 students have participated in programs at the Metz campus. In 2021, a cohort of 50 students was the first to participate in the First-Year Semester Abroad program, beginning their Georgia Tech careers at the European campus. 

“Georgia Tech-Europe has grown into a model of international education and collaboration,” said Abdallah Ougazzaden, president of Georgia Tech-Europe. “Over the past 35 years, we have built lasting partnerships and created unique opportunities for students that connect Georgia Tech with Europe and beyond. As we enter this new chapter, our focus remains on enriching the student experience and strengthening our role as a bridge between cultures, institutions, and industries.”

Looking ahead, Georgia Tech aims to expand the number of students who take advantage of these opportunities — preparing graduates with the global perspective needed to lead in a connected world.

Georgia Tech-Europe has also played a vital role in the region, contributing to the local economy and fostering strong academic partnerships with the Centre national de la recherche scientifique, the University of Lorraine, and leading engineering schools such as CentraleSupélec and École d'ingénieurs française.

Whether it's a 12-week adventure across Europe as part of the Oxford Summer Program or a three-week study of stress and happiness in Italy, the Georgia Tech Office of International Education encourages all students to explore the possibility of pursuing an international experience.

"It's a great opportunity to get experience abroad by traveling, learning, and trying new things,” said Jesse Malone Ferreira, associate director of Education Abroad. “You're improving your global competencies and learning to engage with different cultures. You’re going to be doing that throughout life when you get into the workforce, so we think it's important for students to start developing those skills, and going abroad is a great way to do that while meeting academic goals at the same time."

Forty-four percent of Georgia Tech undergraduates participate in an international experience prior to graduating, and the Institute sends nearly 2,400 students abroad each year. The Office of International Education works with each student to ensure they find the program that best aligns with their major and keeps them on track for graduation.

Costs vary for each program, but as Ferreira explains, "It's a great opportunity, and sometimes students can participate in study abroad programs that are going to cost the same and occasionally less than a term here in Atlanta."

Asher Hogan, a Scheller College of Business student says, "This event opened my eyes to the extensive reach that Georgia Tech has throughout the world and that there are alumni all over the globe willing to connect with the new generation of Tech students."

Current sophomore Sherry Li said, "It reinforced that being part of the GT community means having a lifelong network of support, no matter where you are."

The students on the Oxford Summer Program spent five weeks taking classes in various cities around continental Europe such as Rome, Prague and Barcelona, before their in-residence portion began in Oxford the last week of June and ran until the first weekend of August.

The program's advisor, Kayla Cooper says of the event: "My hope is that the students who attended the event left with confirmation that their options after Tech extend across the globe, and their international experience doesn't have to end with their summer abroad."

As part of the Leadership for Social Good Study Abroad program, sponsored by the Institute for Leadership and Social Impact, two Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business students, Samantha Bolton (BSBA' 26) and Mallory Shurtz (BSBA' 27), spent six weeks in Tiszadob, Kecskemét, and Budapest, Hungary. Throughout their internship, Bolton and Shurtz collaborated with Tűzcsiholó Egyesület to create promotional materials showcasing the organization's diverse initiatives, including their charity shop, mentorship programs, family camp, and school supply distribution efforts.

"I was very excited when I learned about the organization's mission because it is an area I am passionate about. However, I was very hesitant because I had little experience in videography and marketing. I am so grateful that it pushed me to grow into someone with the mentality to overcome challenges and difficulties," said Shurtz.

The two created a detailed media strategy and organized video footage collected during their internship for a documentary. These resources will allow Tűzcsiholó Egyesület to continue their awareness and fundraising efforts effectively. Creating these videos wasn't easy, with the language barrier challenging the students and organizers.

"I learned so much about working around a language barrier and learning to put extra hours into things that matter. I have never made a documentary before, let alone in another language. I spent countless hours preparing, filming, editing, and translating," said Bolton.

Both students highlighted the personal and professional growth they experienced during the program. Shurtz developed her video editing skills, while Bolton gained insights into documentary filmmaking and working across language barriers.

"I feel like the most important thing I learned was connecting with individuals and people around you to do good in the world. Our team showed us hospitality when we stepped into the room to meet them, and they never stopped after that," said Shurtz. "From welcoming us into their homes, driving us around, and asking impactful questions, they never failed to make Hungary feel like home. I have learned the importance of treating others with kindness no matter what and how much a small gesture can make a difference in others' lives. The impact can start with a smile for someone hurting and can go to starting an organization dedicated to the people they serve, like Tuzcsiholo."

Their internship was part of a broader study abroad experience, which included staying in Prague and Vienna before settling in Budapest. There, students attended classes and worked on their projects. The close collaboration with organizations like Autistic Art, Association of Conscious Consumers, Beeco, Habitat for Humanity Hungary, GreenPro, and Kompania Alapitvany, provided student teams with transformative learning opportunities and global project experience, which strengthened their cultural agility. They also had opportunities to explore other European cities during their free time.

Bolton and Shurtz plan to continue supporting Tűzcsiholó Egyesület remotely and hope to apply their newfound skills and insights to future social enterprise work.

"It takes working with the locals of a community and being immersed in their lives to understand what they need. After working with this organization, I know that for any work I plan to do abroad or with disadvantaged communities, I have to either spend enough time there and learn from the people, or I can work with organizational and community leaders, to understand what they need, never just assuming that I know what a community needs," said Bolton.

They both highly recommend the Leadership for Social Good Program to other students interested in positively impacting the world.

As Shurtz concluded, "It is not a program for the faint of heart, but it will be an eye-opening and challenging experience that helps shape you into who you will become in your lifetime. If given the opportunity, I would do the program again to experience all I did during my time abroad. "

Original article: Igniting Generational Change: Georgia Tech Students Work With Hungarian Nonprofit Tűzcsiholó Egyesület.

In early July, Elizabeth Reese, Program and Operations Manager for FYSA, and her team of four former FYSA students helped the FYSA 2024 students settle into Folk Hall and start the first part of the program, which offers three credits. At the welcome lunch, all 95 students were warmly welcomed by President Ángel Cabrera, Vice Provost for International Initiatives Bernard Kippelen, and Buzz! After FASET sessions and tours of the campus, FYSA students started their GT 1000 and APPH classes.

Elizabeth Reese and Ashlee Toomey-Flinn were lead instructors and were ably assisted by Jacquee Williams, Barbara Howard, Andrew McGraw, and Heidi Fiedler. Students also had the chance to get to know their faculty directors and assistant directors as well as interact with local diplomats from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France.

Dr. Teresa Snow taught APPH 1040: Scientific Foundations of Health for the third consecutive summer. FYSA students had the opportunity to engage in service-learning projects with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Trees Atlanta. Students helped prepare 7,675 meals and cleaned outdoor areas on the Atlanta Beltline. When Elizabeth Reese delivered her words of appreciation at the Bon Voyage event, Dr. Snow received a standing ovation from the students—a testament to her dedication and excellent teaching.

Co-curricular and intercultural learning, which is central to the FYSA mission, begins with Global@Home through opportunities like the visit to the High Museum and the Civil Rights Bike Tour. Special thanks go to Brynn Barineau, International Special Programs Advisor, for her vision and planning of these activities.

The three-week Global@Home portion of FYSA wrapped up on August 1 with a convocation speech by Provost Steve McLaughlin and a pep talk from Rat Cap Parent, Henry Sapough.

The students are now off to Oxford, England and Metz, France to spend Fall Semester abroad.

In addition to ten weeks visiting key EU institutions, NATO headquarters, the ICC, French and Romanian Foreign and Defense ministries and much more, students are also engaged in the State Department’s Diplomacy Lab initiative with research projects on the rise of the far-right in European politics and the role of malign AI in elections. Students spend twelve days in Lisbon, Portugal, where globalization began, and is a great location to study current global dynamics. The Portugal component adds a comparative aspect to the program. The program also includes time in Madrid, visiting the Spanish capital, and 5 days in Barcelona as part of the examination of sustainable cities, city branding, and sustainable tourism.

Students will integrate what they learned with the Office of Sustainability this coming Fall 2024.

ILA plays a vital role in cultivating a supportive, respectful, and engaged community. It advances the Institute’s values for thriving on diversity and nurturing the well-being of our community members. ILA usually requires that participants are managers. Thanks to our partnership with ILA, an OIE cohort of both managers and non-managers can apply.

OIE powerfully impacts all corners of campus—from sending thousands of students abroad, to serving more than 5,400 international student and scholars, and fostering good global citizens through the Global Leadership, I-Lead, and I-House living learning communities and intercultural programs like ICEBERG. OIE's annual reports, coming out next week, show how Tech continues to serve locally and globally. 

Academic year 2022 saw a nearly 25% increase in Education Abroad participation—bringing Tech back to just shy of pre-pandemic participation numbers. 2,252 GT students participated in international experiences spanning 55+ countries across six continents. Also, Tech welcomed 1,991 new international students to the Atlanta campus this fall. Nationally, Tech ranks sixteenth in international student population size with more than 5,400 enrolled international students from 124 countries worldwide.

This year’s IEW has a robust program with more than thirty opportunities to engage. Please join us for the IEW Kick-off, which includes snacks from across the world on Monday, November 13 from 9:30-11:30am on Skiles Walkway. Learn how to go global with GT through our numerous student abroad information sessions that will happen throughout the week like the German Exchange Program, Argentina LBAT, and French Study Abroad information sessions. 

Learn from students as they share about their international experiences at the Photo Contest Reception, the Students of Color Exchange Panel, and the Peer Advisor Panel. Students and campus partners alike are invited to experience the world through Korea Day, Japan Day, and through the Cultural Agility Speaker Series.  

Study abroad continues to be one of the most transformative experiences a student can have during their time in college. Launched in September, Georgia Tech’s Free Passport Initiative is a prime example of Tech’s commitment to students connecting globally and reducing financial barriers. By covering the passport application and photo fees, the program provides a gateway for eligible students to engage in international learning experiences. While the Fall application is now closed, there will be a Spring application cycle and more information will be available soon. In addition to the Free Passport Initiative, all domestic students, staff, and faculty are invited to get their passport at the GT Passport Fair.  

Finally, OIE seeks to equip students with knowledge that will serve them now and in the future. International students are invited to learn real-life skills on how to manage finances at Dollars and Sense: An International Student Panel on Personal Finances. There will also be a panel of international students sharing their experiences of successfully navigating the transition into the internship and professional space at the International Professional and Internship Experience Panel. The biology, neuroscience, and biochemistry undergraduates were enrolled in a special offering of the Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory (BIOS 3451) as part of the Georgia Tech Biomolecular Engineering, Science, and Technology study abroad program in Lyon (BEST-Lyon). As it was the first time the lab was offered as part of the program, the instructors took the budding course as an opportunity to try something new, aiming to mesh the lab with the local culture surrounding them while abroad. And for Lyon, that meant incorporating silk.

An interwoven legacy

“Silk is integral to the history of Lyon,” says Jennifer Leavey, principal academic professional in the School of Biological Sciences, assistant dean for Faculty Mentoring in the College of Sciences, and one of the co-instructors for the course. Since it was introduced to Lyon in the 1400’s, silk production and the silk trade have been a driving force of the city’s culture and economy, growing even more with the industrialization of the process in the 19th century. “Lyon grew up because of the silk trade and the looms for jacquard silk that were invented in Lyon.”

The institution hosting the BEST-Lyon program itself — CPE Lyon (École Supérieure de Chimie Physique Électronique de Lyon), a graduate school specializing in chemical engineering — grew out of the chemical industry brought by the silk trade. As CPE Lyon is “intimately linked to the history of silk production in this region of France,” says Heidi Böhnert, silkworms were the perfect topic for the new lab course ​​”since it connects with the history of Lyon, the history of CPE and biotechnology, even microbiology.” Böhnert is the director of International Relations and head of Life Sciences and Biotechnology at CPE Lyon.

Wanting to honor that legacy, Leavey and her co-instructor Alison Onstine, a laboratory manager in the School of Biological Sciences, decided to use silkworms as the model organism for the lab. “We've never taught a cell molecular biology lab on one of the study abroad programs before,” says Onstine, “so, I think this was such an interesting opportunity for us to work in this local angle.”

To prepare the course, the instructors worked with recent alumna Danielle Jones (BCHEM '23) during the Spring semester to develop and troubleshoot research methods for students to use on the silkworms while abroad. Meanwhile, they coordinated with the staff of CPE Lyon to ensure everything would be ready for the student’s arrival. CPE offered their enthusiastic support, raising silkworms from eggs that were donated to the program by Maison Brochier Soieries, a silk atelier in Lyon that has been in business since 1890. The worms were fed fresh mulberry leaves collected from trees on the University of Lyon campus.

Culture meets science abroad

The instructional team designed the lab to be inquiry-based. During the three-week course, the students read literature on the biology of silk production, formulated their own research questions about the process, and designed experiments to test their questions.

“The ideas that the students had for their independent projects were so ambitious and inspiring,” said Onstine. Using various lab techniques taught during the class, the students explored how things like temperature, age, and diet impacted the silk proteins produced, the genes expressed by the worms, and more. “It was an incredible experience and an incredible group of students who were able to work with us to develop this lab course in ways that we hadn’t anticipated at the start.”

“I really loved having this class over the summer, especially in Lyon, because we were kind of the ‘guinea pig’ lab for doing it on the study abroad program,” said Biology undergraduate Sonali Patel. “We had the chance to take the reins on our own experiments, so that was really exciting. And especially working with the silkworms in the silkworm capital of France — that was also very exciting because we’re kind of working with the environment, not just some random experiment.”

“This is the birthplace of silk growing and the silk industry in Europe,” echoed Ebrahim Faizullabhoy, a Biology undergraduate and teaching assistant for the class. “So, it feels like you’re doing something that’s directly applicable, doing it in the place where it originated.”
The course is being offered again next summer, and is expected to continue to grow.

“It is sometimes challenging for GT students to find study abroad programs that offer laboratory courses that are required for their degree program,” says Cameron Tyson, principal academic professional in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, assistant dean of Academic Programs in the College of Sciences, and director of the BEST-Lyon program. “Over the past 10 years, we have continued to develop and expand course offerings in Lyon so that students can make timely progress towards their degree while also learning about history, culture, and economic activity of the region.”

“Linking a laboratory course to place-based concepts is unusual,” adds Leavey. “We hope that this will enhance learning, excite the students about conducting research, and make their study abroad experience special.”

Apply to the BEST-Lyon Program

Georgia Tech undergraduates are invited to apply for the Biomolecular Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) Study Abroad Program in Lyon, France. The BEST-Lyon program combines study at Georgia Institute of Technology, the premier science and engineering institution in the southern U.S., with a summer experience at CPE-Lyon University, a university rich in history in the chemical sciences, engineering, and technology. Participants can explore the inventions of Louis Pasteur, Victor Grignard, Pierre and Marie Curie while studying in France's "second-city", Lyon.

The sponsorship was awarded to the Atlanta Global Research and Education Collaborative (AGREC) as part of Delta’s efforts to expand student access to global educational opportunities. AGREC consists of the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC) — a partnership between Georgia Tech and Georgia State University — as well as Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Spelman College, and Kennesaw State University.

Delta’s sponsorship will fund 50 passports at each partner institution, totaling 300 passports during the 2023-24 academic year. Each university will oversee its own outreach program or dedicated passport day to tailor impact for the unique academic environments and student bodies.

Georgia Tech’s Free Passport Initiative

Georgia Tech’s Free Passport Initiative, launched in mid-September by the Education Abroad team in the Office of International Education (OIE), demonstrates the Institute’s commitment to students connecting globally. Open to students with demonstrated financial need who are receiving financial aid, this initiative aims to eliminate the financial barriers that might hinder their ability to obtain a U.S. passport. By covering the passport application and photo fees, the program provides a gateway for eligible students to embark on journeys of international exploration and learning.

“We are grateful to Delta for their generous support of our students,” said Lorie Johns Páulez, director of education abroad. “Georgia Tech’s mission to create access for all students to connect globally is a top strategic priority, and this funding is critical to getting us closer to this goal.”

Applications for Georgia Tech's Free Passport Initiative's Fall 2023 cycle opened on Sept. 15. Interested students are encouraged to apply by Oct. 15 for consideration. Application acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Details and the application checklist will be made available on OIE’s website.

Students awarded funding will submit their passport applications on Georgia Tech Passport Day, which will be held on Nov. 14 during International Education Week. More details will be announced soon.

The NAFSA Award for Impact in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in International Education is given annually in honor of a NAFSA member who has shown sustained commitment to the association’s Mission, Vision, and Values by advocating for the interests of under-represented populations; improving recruitment and retention of under-represented populations; or incorporating diversity training in international education programming.

The Education Abroad team in the Office of International Education (OIE) focuses on increasing participation in Georgia Tech programs that support students through international experiences, and many of the Institute’s education abroad programs not only provide students the opportunity to participate in life-changing international experiences but also align with the United Nations SDGs.

“Whatever students’ future career plans may entail, participation in an education abroad program can provide them with both theoretical and experiential knowledge directly connected to the SDGs,” said Jesse Malone Ferreira, associate director of education abroad.  

According to Malone Ferreira, “when considering the goals and work of the SDGs, there is an obvious connection to education abroad programs and the Institute’s mission to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition.” A 2022 survey of Tech’s nearly 60 Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs revealed that over 90% of them align with one or more of the SDGs. “Education abroad programs that align with the SDGs support Georgia Tech’s mission and strategic plan, which focus on making a positive impact in the lives of people everywhere,” said Lorie Johns Páulez, director of education abroad.

To foster growth and encourage action connected to the SDGs, the Education Abroad team is collaborating with faculty and campus partners to support the development of new opportunities abroad that align with the SDGs, while identifying current program synergies with their locations, curriculum, and the SDGs. “During the initial program proposal process each year, program directors are encouraged to identify which SDGs might align with their proposed program and to consider ways they may incorporate content supportive of the SDGs into their program,” said Páulez.

While the incorporation of SDG learning objectives and activities might be new to some of Georgia Tech’s education abroad programs, other programs have been weaving SDG learning content into their curriculum and planning for some time. One such example is the Leadership for Social Good Study Abroad Program through the Scheller College of Business. This 10-week program travels to parts of Central and Eastern Europe, offering students an opportunity to earn 12 credit hours through a combination of lectures, case studies, readings, guest speakers, and direct engagement with nonprofit organizations.

Program Director Dori Pap says, “Students in the LSG program gain hands-on experience by working with a community partner on high-priority projects in Budapest, Hungary. Being able to quickly adapt and transition into a different culture requires an open mind, a positive attitude, and a willingness to grow. These experiences prepare students for the global workforce and set them apart in the marketplace.”

The program’s goal is for students to better grasp the realities of social entrepreneurship and the leadership required to develop strong civil societies.

“Students use the UN SDGs to map out all the social and environmental issues that they explore in class and experience through their internships,” said Pap. “Using this framework helps them identify similarities and differences in social innovation on a global scale.”

Another initiative that highlights the focus of the SDGs in our own Atlanta communities through a global lens is the new Think Global, Act Local: The United Nations' SDGs at Home and Abroad program. Co-developed and co-taught by Modern Languages and Serve-Learn-Sustain, this program is designed to help students see Atlanta from new perspectives — as a member of a variety of past and present global communities, and as leaders in advancing sustainable development in innovative ways. The initiative is being supported by OIE’s Global@Home program framework, developed by the Education Abroad team during the pandemic to continue global engagement for students during the period of travel bans.

“This new program is an example of innovation and collaboration in global and local community engagement, and really seeks to integrate curriculum with Georgia Tech’s support for the SDGs,” said Kelly Comfort, associate professor of Spanish and director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Modern Languages, who serves as the program’s co-director.

According to Páulez, “The Education Abroad team will continue providing support to programs exploring ways to map SDGs to their programs and increasing student engagement with the SDGs on a global level.”

The 2024-2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award Competition is open from February to September 15, 2023.

Co-chaired by Adam Stulberg, chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, and Amy Bass Henry, executive director of International Education, the GSE was created after the launch of the Institute’s strategic plan and is an implementation initiative around the Connect Globally focus area. Released in August 2022, the GSE’s request for proposals focused on funding for academic and research faculty to develop new academic offerings on campus and abroad, find synergies between faculty research and other goals of the institution, and support Georgia Tech students in their growth, development, and well-being. 

Five of the six Colleges are represented in the first round of funding. All projects are global, transnational, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, or tie to a Georgia Tech international campus or initiative, all core values of the GSE. Five of the 13 proposals were co-funded with Sustainability Next and will integrate United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-related themes into global programs. Proposals that aligned with additional Institute Strategic Plan goals, such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Transformative Teaching and Learning, were prioritized. The projects include: 

• Launch new faculty-led study abroad programs (Turkey, South Africa)
• Design and launch of a new, interdisciplinary capstone (Puerto Rico)
• Adapt and integrate a globally- and sustainability-focused technical elective into a School of Civil and Environmental Engineering study abroad program (United Kingdom)
• Create a sustainability-focused Global@Home program
• Bolster participation in exchange programs, develop new internship opportunities (Germany)

A competitive, consortium-based international exchange program for undergraduate engineering students, Global E3 allows students at member universities to study at any member university outside their home country. With more than 70 member institutions in 20 countries, the program exchanges about 300 students each year and also offers intensive language instruction and paid internship opportunities.

Johns Páulez will serve a three-year term on the committee, a group of faculty and staff elected by consortium members that leads the consortium.

“I am proud to represent Georgia Tech on this international stage,” said Johns Páulez. “We’re proud to have been a founding member of Global E3, and we’ve seen firsthand the transformative power this exchange program has for both our own undergraduates and those we’ve hosted from abroad. I look forward to supporting the consortium’s future and growth.”

Recognizing a growing demand for internationally experienced engineering graduates, leading universities around the world, including Georgia Tech, worked together to establish Global E3 in 1995. Since the program’s inception, Georgia Tech has either sponsored or hosted more than 100 students.

Global E3 is an integral part of Georgia Tech’s commitment to expanding its global connectivity, which is included among the six focus areas in the Institute’s strategic plan. Before the pandemic, more than 56% of Tech undergraduates participated in an international experience before graduation, and the Institute aspires to be a national leader in study abroad participation.

To that end, the Education Abroad team in the Office of International Education is collaborating with faculty to offer students greater access to international programs and experiences.

In February, applications to serve on the working groups were received from interested students, faculty, and staff. Co-leaders for each working group were also identified. Comprised of more than 250 people representing colleges, schools, and other units from across campus, the working groups will meet weekly and engage between meetings through online collaboration tools, and surveys to complete the strategic analysis and draft goals. In some instances, the working groups will engage guest speakers and subject matter experts to complete their strategic analysis. The working group drafts will then be considered by Institute leadership over the summer, with the final goals and objectives to be finalized and communicated in early fall.

On Nov. 14, 18 Ph.D. students and one master’s student took on the challenge of explaining these topics and others during the final round of Georgia Tech’s annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. 

First prize and a $2,000 research travel grant went to Paola Zanella, a doctoral student in Aerospace Engineering, for her presentation, “Mitigation of Helicopter Accidents Related to Loss of Tail Rotor Effectiveness.”

The Office of International Education (OIE) is hosting events throughout the week that illuminate the global opportunities available at Georgia Tech, both on campus and around the world. Events include trivia, a crepe party, information sessions, movie nights, and more.

This year, a new event called DiversiTea on Thursday, Nov. 21, will feature teas from some of the 126 home countries represented by international students at Georgia Tech. While sampling the unique richness of the various teas, participants will be asked to consider how diversity enriches the academic and cultural experience at Tech.

The event will include a “Fill Your Cup” station, encouraging students to explore personal motivators, wellness indicators, and behaviors that contribute to or detract from their overall sense of well-being.

Tina Rousselot de Saint Céran, director of International Student and Scholar Services, believes it is important to recognize the significant contributions of international diversity to the academic and cultural environment at Georgia Tech. “International students, guest researchers, and faculty bring global perspectives to our classrooms and contribute to a greater understanding of the world’s cultures and global priorities for our students. The diversity of perspectives in our classrooms, labs, and in the communities leads to greater innovations in science and technology. International students and scholars also contribute to global learning outcomes and the production of globally competent graduates,” Rousselot de Saint Céran said.

“Universally, sharing tea brings people together and contributes to a sense of well-being. Well-being is an important topic for many high-achieving international students enduring the rigors of Georgia Tech coursework while also adjusting to a new cultural and linguistic environment,” said Kayli Harlan, DiversiTea’s event organizer and international student and scholar advisor.

Wellness is an inclusive topic and incorporates many aspects of the student experience such as successful time management and study habits, healthy diet and exercise practices, engagement in co-curricular and socio-cultural programming, access to religious communities and practice, connection with affiliate groups, and hobby communities.

When asked what she misses the most about home, Manlin Xu, a first-semester undergraduate from southwest China, smiles and says, “The food.” Hao-Lun Hsu, a new graduate student from Taiwan studying mechanical engineering, finds time management tricky when studying in a second language and balancing academic and personal life demands. “I have to spend more time studying. And also I now have to cook for myself.”

Both Xu and Hsu have found successful strategies for coping with new environmental stressors by seeking out personal wellness activities. Xu joined an ultimate frisbee team and instituted a weekly routine that encourages her to explore new topics and meet new people. Hsu joined the Student Alumni Association, Mentor Jackets, and Leadership Edge to help him develop new relationships and prepare for his professional journey.

DiversiTea is the first of a series of wellness activities in OIE’s Fill Your Cup campaign, which is designed to support the goal of whole-person education as articulated in the report from Georgia Tech’s Commission on Creating the Next in Higher Education. It also aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 of fostering good health and well-being.

Another upcoming IEW event that supports UN Sustainable Development Goals is “Reinventing the Toilet: Solving a Global Equity Challenge” on Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. in Room 1443, Klaus Advanced Computing Building. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Generation 2 Reinvented Toilet program, led by Shannon Yee, seeks to improve access to sanitation around the world.

This summer, the Office of International Initiatives convened a working group of members of the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and the Office of the Provost to develop a resource to guide educational and research activities that happen abroad. The major deliverables of the working group were designed to help Georgia Tech make decisions and ensure proper planning, compliance, and transparency around all international activities.

“Georgia Tech is proud to engage with researchers, scholars, and institutions all over the world as an expression of the Institute’s motto of Progress and Service,” said Chaouki T. Abdallah, Georgia Tech’s executive vice president for Research. “We remain wholeheartedly committed to those important global collaborations, but we must safeguard the Institute, and ensure all activities are fully transparent and in compliance with Georgia Tech policies, as well as applicable government laws and regulations.”

Site users can find direct links to Georgia Tech resources, policies, and relevant campus contacts for offices and units that manage a variety of issues, including export control; managing conflicts of interest; appointments at other institutions; intellectual property; materials, data, and confidential information; the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA); international agreements; disclosing foreign relationships; lab tours; hosting foreign visitors; and international travel.

“Georgia Tech promotes a culture of global engagement and believes that our community is enriched through opportunities to study, work, serve, or do research abroad,” said Rafael L. Bras, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “Thanks to the working group, the guide now provides access to Tech’s standing policies and procedures governing international activities in one centralized location.”

The guide will be maintained by the Office of International Initiatives and will be available on faculty and staff resource pages at several touchpoints, including global.gatech.edu, research.gatech.edu, and provost.gatech.edu, among others.

The working group also refined Georgia Tech’s Guiding Principles for International Activities, a standard set of objective criteria used by the Office of International Initiatives for measuring each international activity’s impact on academic activities, value to the Institute, compliance with applicable policies, sustainability and viability, and risk assessment and mitigation concerns.

Georgia Tech is also in the process of creating an International Advisory Committee comprised of representatives of the administration, faculty, and staff. The committee will be chaired by Yves Berthelot, vice provost for International Initiatives, and will provide guidance and advice regarding how Georgia Tech engages internationally (e.g. research, MOUs, master research agreements, etc.).

“Our success in international activities must be assessed in full consideration of geopolitical factors, as well as current and potential state and federal regulations and legislation,” said Berthelot. “With those considerations in mind, the work of the committee will prove vital for Georgia Tech as we continue to grow our relationships across the world and explore new opportunities to engage globally.”

Nominations for the committee are currently being accepted through Oct. 7. Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit self-nominations or nominations for a colleague. Details on the final committee roster will be made available via the online tool, once finalized. Highlights from the program thus far include:

• A visit to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg, France during the elections allowed students to observe the election returns live in the town hall of Metz, France. The following day students got to mingle with the mayor and other politicians, one of whom will welcome them next month at the French National Assembly when the program concludes in Paris. 
• On June 13^th, students spent the day at NATO headquarters where they had the opportunity to meet with several high ranking officers and advisors, sit in on panel discussions, and hear the perspective of working as a member of an international staff. Below is a picture of the students during their day at NATO HQ.
• Participants of the program were honored to welcome Dean Royster to Brussels, Belgium where she visited the program for several days.  Celebrating Belgian-American friendship, the families who hosted Georgia Tech students for their month-long stay in Brussels were invited to meet Dean Royster and former Belgian Consul General to Atlanta, Benoit Standaert. They also joined the group for a private guided tour of the recently re-opened, world renowned Royal Museum for Central Africa. Part of the museum’s collection was brought to the Carter Center in 2014 through the collaborative efforts of Dean Royster and Consul General Standaert.
• This year marks the centennial of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and thanks to Dr. Monique Seefried, Commissioner on the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission, students participating in the program will have the opportunity to participate in a symposium and ceremony commemorating the event at the Palace of Versailles on June 28^th.

Currently the top 5 exchange institutions are UC3M in Madrid, Spain; HKUST in Hong Kong; UNSW in Sydney, Australia; NUS in Singapore, and Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Of the 178 students studying abroad on exchange, this group represents 27 of the 35 undergraduate majors at Tech. Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Business Administration, and Biomedical Engineering are the top majors for this group of students. In a small break from Tech tradition, this group is 42% male and 58% female.

The biology major had been conducting research in Germany when she was invited to Italy for fieldwork with a research group that included a renowned insect expert. Though not insect-savvy herself, Weigel jumped at the chance to learn from the best. She had just set down her things at the campsite when hordes of red ants began to crawl on her legs.

“I freaked out, ran away, and jumped in the lake,” she said. “No one knew what was wrong.”

Eventually she and her colleagues broke the language barrier to identify that Weigel thought the ants were venomous because they look like a variety in the southeastern U.S. with a particularly painful sting. As it turned out, these particular Italian ants were harmless.

“We got into a discussion about ecology, awareness of your surroundings, and how what you’ve been exposed to matters in how you respond to things,” she said.

Many students learn similar lessons when studying abroad: By expanding the scope of their world, they become better students, learners, and researchers, and ultimately employees, colleagues, and friends.

Today, more Georgia Tech students are spending increasing time abroad as they pursue the International Plan (IP), a degree designation earned by a record 42 students this academic year.

The Office of International Education

Winter first began considering the Peace Corps after attending the Fall 2016 All Majors Career Fair. “It seemed like an interesting job that would offer valuable experience while providing a way to help others.” A few months later, he was certain he wanted to apply, but waited until February 2017 for the posting of positions with 2018 departure dates.

After getting advice on the application essay from MSE Senior Academic Professional Amanda Gable and receiving a professional reference from Mary Lynn Realff, associate professor and associate chair for undergrad programs, he applied for the position of rural aquaculture extension specialist in Zambia. While some applicants wait months for an interview, Winter was contacted less than a week later.

He received an official invitation to join in July, and began the process of legal and medical clearance, which just concluded. He departed for Zambia on February 12. During the first three months of his service, Winter will live with a host family in Zambia to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture. After acquiring the necessary skills to assist his community, he will be sworn into service and assigned to a community in Zambia to live and work for two years with the local people.

Winter will assist fish farming communities to start and improve construction of fishponds, increase production, integrate aquaculture with agriculture, increase incomes from ponds, and strengthen fish farming groups. The Peace Corps "is not just a job to get experience--it's something different and a way to give back. . . . and, I've always liked fish!"

He will work in cooperation with the local people and partner organizations on sustainable, community-based development projects that improve the lives of people in Zambia while developing leadership, technical and cross-cultural skills that will give him a competitive edge when he returns home. Peace Corps volunteers return from service as global citizens well positioned for professional opportunities in today’s global job market.

Winter joins an elite group of 18 Georgia Tech volunteers currently serving in the Peace Corps, and one of 320 GT grads who have served in Peace Corps since 1962.

About Peace Corps/Zambia: There are more than 235 Volunteers in Zambia working with their communities on projects in agriculture, education, the environment, and health. During their service in Zambia, Volunteers learn to speak local languages, including Bemba, Chitonga, Kaonde, Lunda, Mambwe-Lungu, and Nyanja. More than 1,940 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in Zambia since the program was established in 1994.

2016 Recipients 

Drs. Pinar Keskinocak, and Julie Swann, Professors in the Stewart School of Industrial Engineering, co-founders (together with former ISyE faculty member Dr. Ozlem Ergun, who is now at Northwestern University) and co-directors of the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems (HHS).

Drs. Pinar Keskinocak and Julie Swann have built an outstanding portfolio of global outreach, education, and research activities through the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems (HHS).  Recently named the first Interdisciplinary Research Center (IRCs) at Georgia Tech, this center touches on disaster mitigation and planning, basic humanitarian needs such as food or water, and health systems including healthcare delivery, disaster prevention or management, and public policy.  The global visibility that HHS has brought to GT is substantial and far-reaching, and includes an internationally renowned annual conference on Health and Humanitarian Logistics, a professional education certificate program, and a variety of project-based courses that bring a global perspective to degree- based students.  It has impacted hundreds of students, faculty and organizations on a global scale.

2015 Recipient 
Professor John McIntyre, Professor in the Scheller College of Business, and Executive Director of the Georgia Tech’s Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).

Dr. McIntyre is founding Director of the Georgia Tech CIBER, Professor of management in the Scheller College of Business, with a courtesy appointment in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.  Since 1993, Dr. McIntyre has been a major force driving the internationalization of Georgia Tech, leading the GT-CIBER center for more than twenty years, and winning again in 2014 another four-year renewal as of one of 17 national centers of excellence funded by the U.S. Department of Education.  Last year, half of CIBERs around the nation lost their funding due to extreme budgetary cut backs by the federal funding agencies for international education funds.  However, Dr. McIntyre tireless efforts secured another four year of funding for GT-CIBER, to continue the exchange partnership with more than 20 universities around the globe, and strengthen international collaborations for faculty and students (undergraduate and graduate) and grow the global business ecosystem of Metro Atlanta. GT-CIBER has positively impacted thousands of students on campus. Dr. McIntyre was instrumental in helping frame the International Plan and supporting the LBAT program.  In the past few years, Dr. McIntyre also created and developed the Georgia Tech Global Business Forum, the ChinaGoesGlobal consortium and annual research conference, the Research Symposium on Globalization of Business Higher Education, and co-created the US-India Business Forum, the education and business community to international economic and business opportunities. Dr. McIntyre has raised significant competitive grants that have enhanced the international visibility of Georgia Tech, including: providing seed grants and various summer support, establishing over 20 Georgia Tech international-related courses in various disciplines, creating innovative undergraduate partnerships and programs that include foreign languages and global economics, supporting students for study or work abroad. Dr. McIntyre’s impact on the internationalization of Georgia Tech has been sustained and profound.

2014 Recipient 
Professor Michael L. Best, Professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs (Ivan Allen College) and the School of Interactive Computing (College of Computing).

Dr. Best’s is a scholar at the intersection of information and communications technology (ICT) and international development (ID), using engineering, design, social science and public policy to tackle issues of post-conflict reconstruction, ICT policy, innovation and entrepreneurship, and civic engagement most particularly in Africa.  Dr. Best and his team have developed technological platforms that have a true societal impact in countries such as Liberia, Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. For instance, when violence erupted in northern Nigeria after the Presidential election, people in the Georgia Tech situation room responding to reports flagged by the software were able to contact personnel from public safety agencies who coordinated the response.  Dr. Best has also been instrumental in bringing a number of senior officials from African countries to our Atlanta campus, including Ministers and, most notably, the President of Liberia. Dr. Best is actively engaged in service activities at Georgia Tech related to Global Engagement: he is a faculty advisor to the African Student Association on campus, and leader of the faculty task force on Africa. His efforts have clearly enhanced the worldview of his students and the global visibility of Georgia Tech.

Congratulations to Dr. Abdallah Ougazzaden, winner of the 2013 Denning Faculty Award for Global Engagement. Dr. Ougazzaden is the Director of the International Join Research Lab UMI2958 Georgia Tech-CNRS, Director of Georgia Tech-Lorraine, and Co-President of Institut Lafayette. He is also a professor of Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. 

2012 Recipient

Congratulations to Dr. G. Tong Zhou, who was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Steven A. Denning Faculty Award for Global Engagement.  A faculty member in the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech since 1995, Dr. Zhou’s research interests include the general areas of statistical signal processing and communications. Since 2005, she has played an instrumental role in establishing Georgia Tech’s collaborative education programs in Shanghai, China and currently serves as the Director of Georgia Tech-Shanghai.

This effort is currently being led by the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, and Spelman College, in collaboration with Agnes Scott College, Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Morehouse College, and University of Georgia. We are just at the beginning stages and are eager to engage more institutions, organizations, and groups.

USCIS will enter credit card data into the Pay.gov system, operated by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and will then destroy the Form G-1450 to protect the credit card information.

Applicants for naturalization and those renewing or replacing their Green Cards can already use a credit card when they file online at uscis.gov. In addition, USCIS has been accepting credit card payments for naturalization forms filed at Lockbox facilities since 2015.

Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States. The experimental vaccine may be more expensive and must be given four to six weeks before travel.  The clinics chosen to give this vaccine are part of a national study and have more requirements of patients in addition to the prescription for the vaccine.   If students aren’t sure if they are going to need the vaccine, they can check the website for the Centers for Disease Control:  www.cdc.gov/travel  and input the country they are traveling to.  The same site has a list of providers that are authorized to carry the Yellow Fever vaccine.  All of these clinics require an advance appointment and some only serve specific populations.  If students have a travel medicine appointment already scheduled they will want to contact the clinic and make sure the clinic has the vaccine in stock.  If students need an appointment they will want to start now trying to find a clinic with stock.

In the meantime, federal government offices that are not fee-funded or designated to continue operations because they offer security or other essential services will generally have to shut down and furlough most workers, until a deal is struck.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants of up to $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need participating in credit-bearing study abroad programs.  Students studying a critical need language may be eligible to receive a supplemental grant of up to $3,000. The Gilman Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not consider these unique and valuable opportunities due to financial constraints.

All applications are due Tuesday, March 6, 2018 by 11:59pm (central time). Advisors have until March 13, 2018 to certify applications. Georgia Tech's certifying advisors are Ashlee Flinn and Aaron Gamboa

Students applying for any academic term must meet the eligibility requirements below:

• Citizen of the United States;
• Undergraduate student in good academic standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States  
• Federal Pell Grant recipient or able to provide proof that the applicant will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term in which he/she will be studying abroad;
• Student is in the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad approved for academic credit by the student’s home institution for up to one academic year.
  • (Note: Minimum period of study in a single country is for at least three weeks for students from four-year institutions.) Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement;

Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominately spoken can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000 for a maximum combined award of $8,000. This award is competitive and offered to a limited number of Gilman scholars each year. In addition to receiving supplemental funds for language study, students who receive the Critical Need Language Award and complete their Gilman Scholarship requirements will be offered the opportunity to take the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). This test and the results will serve as both an evaluation measure of the award and as a credential for the award recipient. To be considered for the Critical Need Language Award, a brief additional essay is required and can be submitted in the same Gilman application.

Rather than compete with existing study abroad options, this program seeks new opportunities for groups currently underserved such as:

Members of the program cohort will receive funding to be used toward conference participation and program planning. Faculty will also receive mentorship from a current Faculty-led Study Abroad Program Director. Faculty selected for the program cohort need approval from their academic unit, should anticipate five to ten hours of work per month, and commit to submitting a faculty-led study abroad program proposal for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The Greece and Italy Study Abroad Program, led by the School of Architecture’s Thanos Economou, offers a seven-week, on-site, immersive study of cities, buildings, sculpture, and painting from the Bronze Age to the pre-industrial city in Greece and Italy. Doyle found his passion for history and ancient architecture particularly enriched when the program visited the Acropolis to hear a guest lecture by Petros Georgopoulos, a sculptor with YSMA.

"To me, the Acropolis is one of — if not the — most important monuments in all of Western civilization,” Doyle said. “YSMA's continuous restoration efforts are a service not only to the people of Greece, but to the people of the free world. Being a part of such a momentous effort has been an incredible personal experience for me."

Doyle participated in YSMA’s efforts as a member of the Parthenon Restoration Service and spent two months working on the rock.

YSMA has directed restorations at the Acropolis since 1976, with a goal to repair damage to the monuments, which has occurred over the centuries as a result of natural, historical, and unintended mistakes from prior interventions. The current restoration is characterized by multidisciplinary, long-term research efforts involving mechanical, chemical, biological, artistic, architectural, engineering, and archaeological techniques, earning the team global recognition for their contributions to the monuments and various disciplines.

Doyle’s tasks included creating educational presentations on the Parthenon for English-speaking students and tourists, transcribing YSMA’s restoration processes into a simplified Gantt Chart for better visual representation, hand-drafting new mechanical parts for a mechanism used in YSMA's marble member transportation process, learning to sculpt Pentelic marble from sculptors whose techniques come from the legendary school on the Greek island of Tinos, and applying these techniques to three marble members who will be installed back onto the Parthenon.

His story is one of many that come from students participating in study abroad programs. Students interested in the Art and Architecture in Greece and Italy program, or other programs, should attend the Study Abroad Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom to learn more about upcoming opportunities.

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) stayed preliminary injunctions that had partially blocked the (partial or full) travel restrictions on entry to the U.S. from being enforced under Proclamation 9645 associated with Section 2(e) of the Executive Order 13780.  The SCOTUS decision authorizes the U.S. government to enforce travel restrictions on all eight countries while appeals in the Ninth and Fourth Circuits, or any further SCOTUS review, are in proceedings.

Raksha Muthukumar, a computer science student, spent a year studying in Lausanne, Switzerland, as part of Georgia Tech’s EPFL Exchange Program. “EPFL has a great structure in place for exchange students to get to know each other, and the city is really easy to navigate,” Raksha said. “The classes are a lot like Georgia Tech’s, so you’ll be well prepared and definitely feel the familiarity in that aspect. This fellowship provides funding for one recent or soon to be Bachelor of Science Georgia Tech undergraduate to pursue a one-year Master's degree program at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and one St. Andrews student to pursue a one-year Master's degree program at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Recipients will each receive $35,000 to help cover tuition, fees, and living expenses while enrolled at St. Andrews and Georgia Tech.

The Bobby Jones Fellowship is more than an academic sojourn. Above all it is an ambassadorship, rewarding its beneficiary for his/her exemplary citizenship and requiring him/her to exert him/herself while abroad as an active and energetic representative of his/her university and country.

This fellowship is open to Physics and ECE seniors that will be graduating in May or August 2018. However, Physics and ECE students who will be graduating in the near future, are encouraged to consider this opportunity for the future.

Tech will host its first Global Internship Fair on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

In the past, the Global Internship Fair was part of the Study Abroad Fair that occurred in October; as the number of companies and students participating in global internships grew, though, the Office of International Education (OIE) found that a separate fair was necessary.

“Student participation in global internships at Tech has increased by about 55 percent in the past few years, so we wanted to have a special event to connect students with employers and resources surrounding global internships,” said Jennifer Baird, director of the Global Internship Program and International Plan at Georgia Tech.

Who Should Attend

Undergraduate and graduate students, from all majors, interested in working overseas are encouraged to attend. Baird said, “everyone is welcome to attend the fair. Students can stop by in between classes or whenever their schedule allows.”

Why Attend

Baird said the Global Internship Fair is unlike any other Tech career fairs.

“This event is multifaceted, featuring opportunities for global internships along with resources that explain exactly how global internships work,” she said.

Tech students who have participated in global internships can attend the fair to recount their experiences and answer questions. The fair will also include virtual presentations from overseas companies that were unable to attend the fair in person.

How to Get the Job

Students interested, but possibly overwhelmed, by the idea of a global internship are encouraged to attend the fair to understand what work looks like in another culture and to see that global internships are a real possibility for Tech students.

“Applying for a global internship is not unlike applying for a job within the United States,” Baird said. “What makes it difficult is that students are competing on a global scale. Luckily, Georgia Tech has a good reputation globally, so students are competitive for these roles.”

After getting the job, the Office of International Education assists students with the preparation involved in working overseas, including cultural preparation, obtaining a visa for the country in which they will be working, and registering for the international internship course. “Students pursuing global internships are not alone. OIE is available to help students throughout the process.”

Participants are encouraged to dress in business casual and bring copies of their resume. There is no need to register in advance, but students should bring a BuzzCard for check-in.

The IP is an optional degree designator, in which a series of experiential and course requirements is built into a student's major. While they can join at any time, most students typically join as first-years. Completion of the IP results in a special designation on the diploma, indicating that a student has made international education a central part of his or her learning experience. 

To complete the program, students spend at least six months abroad engaged in study, internship, or research; demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language; take three globally focused courses; and complete a culminating capstone project.

By creating a coherent plan that immerses the student in a language and culture, and by incorporating complementary global coursework into the program, IP students gain valuable insights into their host culture, their own culture, and the global context in which they will one day work.

These insights benefit students in any field, regardless of where they go after Georgia Tech. Employers increasingly report a need to recruit graduates who have global perspectives, can work with diverse teams, and are flexible, open-minded, and able to approach problems from more than one angle. IP graduates regularly cite these attributes as key takeaways from the program.

“Not only did I personally enjoy my time studying and living abroad, but in terms of academic and career opportunities, I was able to relate so many of my experiences to a skill my employers were seeking,” said Michelle Lee, a 2015 industrial engineering and IP graduate. “My time abroad also allowed me to relate to a diverse group of people, which was very helpful as diversity is so ingrained in the country and society I live in.”

Although it is becoming more common for universities to offer global minors and certificates, the IP remains unique in its depth. Many similar programs require a shorter amount of time abroad, such as 5-6 weeks versus IP’s six months. In addition, the IP becomes part of a student's major, not a side pursuit. 

Becky Byler, a 2013 biomedical engineering and IP graduate, came to Tech in part because of the IP offering. Now, she’s pursuing a Ph.D. at Yale University.

“Studying, working, and researching abroad through the International Plan truly developed me into the ‘humanitarian engineer’ that I am today,” Byler said. “I became a biomedical engineer fluent in discussing and solving technical problems in Spanish, and a contributing member of several multinational teams. Through programs like the International Plan, we have the tools to train the next generation.”

Since the inception of the IP in 2005, Tech's internationalization has increased significantly. The number of international programs available to students has increased by 75 percent, and the undergraduate participation rate in international experiences has increased from 33 percent to 54 percent. The IP also led to the founding of the Global Internship Program (formerly Work Abroad), which now sends nearly 200 students abroad for internships each year. The IP directly contributes to Tech’s strategic goal of graduating good global citizens.

The Office of International Education supports IP students by offering special sections of GT 1000 for newly accepted IP students, opportunities to network with IP upperclassmen and alumni, and specialized advising on pathways to completing the program. OIE also works with academic units to ensure adequate international opportunities for students in each major, to keep the IP curriculum current, and to administer the IP capstones.

Georgia Tech’s Global Internship Program facilitates overseas internships for GT students with the purpose of allowing students to gain practical work experience in their disciplines while developing critical cross-cultural skills. Global Internships also allow Georgia Tech to expand its network and reputation around the world, with students interning in 45+ countries. For the host companies and organizations, they gain access to top-notch students, internationalize their workplace, and increase their own brand awareness on Georgia Tech’s campus.

While many overseas internships take place in traditional corporate settings, students also do research internships, government internships, and service-based internships.  Global internship students are spread all over the world, however, there are certain locations that are more common for GT students due to their corporate cultures and links to GT. The top countries during the 2016-17 year were Germany (44), France (20), Japan (19), India (17), China (14), Switzerland (7), England (6) and Singapore (5).

Global Internship Program staff develop relationships with overseas companies and organizations to offer internships to GT students, and provide resources and advising to students on how to seek, obtain, and prepare for international internships. Roughly half of the students who intern abroad find the opportunities on their own, showcasing our students’ entrepreneurial savvy. Through the process of seeking, interviewing for, and undertaking overseas internships, students exercise their professional development, networking, and intercultural communication skills.

Students intern at large multinational companies such as BMW, Bosch, Siemens, Safran, NTT, Microsoft, and Airbus, as well as with start-ups, government offices, and prestigious research universities such as Technical University of Munich (TUM) and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Students make meaningful contributions during their internships on tech-related projects including self-driving car technology, drone technology, sustainable energy consulting, machine learning, and data visualization in bioinformatics. However, global internships are not just for engineering and computer science students. Students from all six of GT’s Colleges participate in global internships. One College of Science student developed AP science curriculum for a Dominican Republic high school, while an Ivan Allen student assisted with European Parliament policy and research in Belgium.

Nikhil Dhawan, a Mechanical Engineering undergrad, said of his recent internship with conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra in India, “My work at Mahindra Electric allowed me a grassroots-level understanding of working in an electric vehicle company, as well as the unique challenges associated with advancing electric vehicle production in a developing country like India. Through this internship, I got to apply the skills I learned at Georgia Tech in a focused and practical way.”

Mary Stephens, a Biology undergrad, echoed these sentiments regarding her summer internship in Peru. “My international medical internship was amazing! I spent 7 weeks immersed in a new culture, working in a clinic alongside doctors and nurses to meaningfully contribute to the community. Sergio Monroy, a Mechanical Engineering Master’s student, interned with inodú, a start up consulting firm focused on sustainable energy in Santiago, Chile. “Having the opportunity to work closely with the inodú team was a very valuable experience for me, given their passion for what they do, as well as their technical expertise. Being able to work at a startup-consulting company immersed me in a fast-paced environment, where I had to quickly learn and apply my knowledge to different problems and situations in the context of the energy industry. In addition, the Court formally lifted the injunction on the section outlining the government's study which could lead, under section 2(e) of the executive order, to an indefinite ban on entry by nationals of countries that do not provide the U.S. government with sufficient information on citizens who are applying for U.S. visas or immigration benefits.

While the Court cited several examples of such “bona fide relationships” — such as students admitted to a U.S. college or university or individuals employed by U.S. entities — further guidance from the State Department is needed regarding full application of these rules. The Supreme Court will hear arguments on this case in October, and a final decision is expected during the 2017-18 academic year.
