Allen (B.S., 1933) served as Mayor from 1962 to 1970, a period of profound expansion for the city, and is widely credited for his efforts to desegregate Atlanta and maintain peace during the Civil Rights Movement.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJody Thompson, Head of Archives and Records Management, reflects that the \u201ccollaboration with the College is a great fit for the Library Archives. We can offer our knowledge of preserving and displaying collections, paper or virtual. We look forward to working with them.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDanielle Sharpe\u003C\/strong\u003E, a \u003Cstrong\u003EHistory, Technology, and Society\u003C\/strong\u003E (HTS) major in the Ivan Allen College (IAC) with a personal interest in urban planning and the development of Atlanta, is working with the project team to digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials related to Allen\u2019s legacy. Among the resources that will be made available are oral histories with major figures in modern Atlanta history conducted by \u003Cstrong\u003ERonald Bayor\u003C\/strong\u003E, professor in the school of HTS, during the writing of his book \u003Cem\u003ERace and the Shaping of Twentieth Century Atlanta\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E(UNC Press). The digital collection will reflect the distinct mission of IAC, while showcasing the Archives\u2019 strength in curating unique collections.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIAC Dean \u003Cstrong\u003EJacqueline Jones Royster\u003C\/strong\u003E hopes the digital collection \u201cwill be of benefit in two specific ways: 1) to researchers who need a starting point to explore Ivan Allen Jr.\u2019s contributions as a business leader and as Mayor of Atlanta during a critical period in the city\u2019s urban development, and 2) to students and the public in general in raising knowledge and awareness of Mayor Allen\u2019s leadership in the rise of Atlanta as an international city.
