{"180851":{"#nid":"180851","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Daniel Guggenheim School of AE\/ Gebhardt Distinguished Lecture Series presents:  Dr. Paul Adams","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESpeaker: \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPaul Adams\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChief Operating Officer\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPratt \u0026amp; Whitney\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETitle: \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChallenges and Opportunities for Future Aerospace Propulsion Systems\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEconomic demand and concern for the environment has stimulated innovations in the gas turbine engine industry.\u0026nbsp; Aircraft performance improvements depend largely on the engines.\u0026nbsp; Historically, engine fuel burn has improved at rate of about 1% per year.\u0026nbsp; However, with the cost of petroleum based fuels rising and no end in sight, the engine manufacturers must innovate to realize step change improvements to fuel burn, noise, and emissions.\u0026nbsp; Pratt \u0026amp; Whitney\u2019s innovative high bypass ratio Geared Turbofan\u2122 engine architecture provides double-digit percentage improvements in fuel efficiency and reductions in noise and emissions.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;To fully leverage the high bypass Geared Turbofan\u2122 engine architecture in the future, we must consider advances in aircraft propulsion system integration to enable larger fan diameters and higher overall pressure ratio cycles for improved cycle efficiency.\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;Innovations in aerodynamic systems, material advancement, and manufacturing methods are important.\u0026nbsp; However, the challenge becomes the speed to develop and integrate new technologies into the product as well as practicality and cost effectiveness of the technologies.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;An overview of the recent advances in propulsion system design will be presented along with a review of how engine integration, materials advancement, and manufacturing methods are playing a critical role in the development, realization and deployment of new systems with unprecedented performance and durability.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBio:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPaul Adams is Chief Operating Officer for Pratt \u0026amp; Whitney, a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines and a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX).\u0026nbsp; He leads a unified operations strategy across all Pratt \u0026amp; Whitney business units and ensures the readiness of the company\u2019s global supply chain.
