King, the oldest son of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, is a leading advocate for strategic nonviolent action to rid the world of social, political and economic injustice.  

“Diversity is one of Georgia Tech’s greatest assets and priorities, and we’re delighted to have Dr. King’s son speak at this event that has become the centerpiece of our MLK celebration,” said Archie Ervin, vice president for Institute Diversity. “It is our hope that events like this one will spark discussion and renew enthusiasm for building the kind of society Dr. King hoped to create.”

The lecture will be held at 3 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. King’s talk will focus on the theme of the celebration, “The Dream and the Journey Continue.” Those interested in attending should RSVP here.  

“I consider it an honor to be invited to share my father’s message, particularly during the King Holiday,” King said. “I look forward to speaking at Georgia Tech and meeting with students at one of our nation’s premier institutions for higher learning.”

• Campuswide Student Celebration: Coming Together to Fulfill the Dream
  Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m.

  This event will include student speeches, cultural celebrations and a candle lighting ceremony. Reception to follow.
• Social Justice Training (For Department of Housing and Division of Student Affairs staff only.)
  Tuesday, Jan. 16

  The Depart of Housing and the Division of Student Affairs will participate in Social Justice Training to commemorate the King Holiday. Becky Martinez from the Social Justice Institute will conduct the training. For a detailed description of this program, click here.
• FOCUS Program
  Thursday, Jan. 17 (runs Thursday through Sunday)
  Location: Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center

  FOCUS gives prospective minority graduate students an opportunity to visit Georgia Tech for an overview of graduate degree programs. The program is designed to encourage attendees to pursue an advanced degree at Georgia Tech or the graduate school of their choice. Attendees must apply and register. • National MLK Holiday Observance: A Day of Service
  Monday, Jan. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  Make a difference with “A Day On, Not a Day Off.” Join Georgia Tech’s third annual MLK Day of Service, a campuswide initiative honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Participants will serve in teams and engage in service projects with metro Atlanta community partners. • Student Government Association Diversity Symposium
  Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
  Location: Piedmonth Room, Student Center- Piedmont Room

  All students welcome. The symposium is designed to promote dialogue among students about ways we can embrace and leverage the scope and breadth of the diversity found within our community. Through open dialogue, we are better able to identify the important issues that we as a community must continue to address now and in the future.
• Civil Rights Tour
  Saturday, Jan. 26
  Location: Birmingham, Ala.

  Georgia Tech faculty and students will take a journey to Birmingham, Ala., to visit key civil rights sites, including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the 16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park and the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.
