{"163891":{"#nid":"163891","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Dr. Emily Derbyshire, Harvard Medical School","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EDr. Emily Derbyshire, Harvard Medical School\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EA Chemical Genetics Study of Liver Stage Malaria\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDespite increased efforts to develop new therapeutic agents for malaria, a parasitic disease that afflicts millions of people each year, the disease\u2019s impact is increasing due to parasite resistance to first-line antimalarial drugs. \u0026nbsp;All existing drugs target a limited range of processes in the parasite\u2019s blood stage, and in an effort to develop dramatically different therapies a high-throughput chemical genetic screen for inhibitors of the parasite\u2019s liver stage was performed. \u0026nbsp;This presentation covers the parasite\u2019s life cycle, with an emphasis on the need for targeting the liver stage, and our phenotypic screen to address the elusive liver stage of malaria.\u0026nbsp; The high-throughput screen identified 37 known bioactive compounds, including some FDA-approved drugs, as liver stage malaria inhibitors.
