I\u2019m sure there is much emotion in your household as you plan the next few weeks leading to the start of the academic year. I want to start by saying congratulations and welcome \u2014 you are now part of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket family! Here at Tech, we are anxiously preparing for and awaiting the arrival of your sons and daughters. I hope they are as excited as we are about the upcoming fall semester. I know next year will be exciting for them and for you. Coming to college is filled with a full range of emotions for students. It takes some time for all to adjust to the changes that come with a child leaving home, especially if it is your first child off to college or your one and only child.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlthough I do not claim to have all the answers, I would like to offer some practical lessons for you to remind your son or daughter of as they transition from home to college. This advice is based upon my own experiences, both as a parent and college administrator who has been working with college students for 30 years. These lessons have been adapted from Marian Wright Edelman\u2019s book \u003Cem\u003EThe Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELessons for success at college:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Col\u003E\u003Cli\u003ESet goals for yourself and work quietly and systematically to achieve them.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDon\u2019t be afraid of taking risks or being criticized.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ENever give up!\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDon\u2019t be afraid of hard work-embrace it.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EChoose your friends carefully.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBe a can-do, will-try person.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ERemember \u201cyou are in charge of your own attitude.\u201d\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ol\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPlease don\u2019t hesitate to contact me or my staff at 404.894.6367 if you have any questions or concerns.
