John is an assistant professor in the Schools of Architecture and Building Construction, and the founder of Design Process Innovation - a company that provides advanced tools and consulting for the AEC industry. John’s research is in the areas of collaborative design process modeling and management, building information modeling, multidisciplinary analysis and optimization, and decision-making. John is a licensed architect in California and LEED accredited professional with experience in industry as an architect, construction project manager, and owner’s representative. He is an active participant and reviewer in several international journals and conferences. His group researches and teaches formal theories for design and construction processes, and ways to implement these theories as computer methods and apply them in industry to improve environmental sustainability, social benefit, and economic efficiency. He has contributed over 60 articles to the professional literature and is a frequent speaker at industry and academic events. John’s recent honors include the American Institute of Architects Technology and Practice Award for Course Development; FIATECH’s Celebration of Engineering and Technology Innovation Award and Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award; and selection as a speaker at the National Academy of Engineering’s Future of Engineering symposium.
