{"137511":{"#nid":"137511","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Nunn School Students in US-China Dialogue in Guangzhou, PRC","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAt the end of May, eight American students including three Nunn School undergraduates participated in a lively dialogue and debate with ten mainland Chinese students on US-China relations, the rise of China, and the role of the US in the Asia Pacific Region.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.modlangs.gatech.edu\/degrees\/iaml\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EInternational Affairs and Modern Languages (IAML\u003C\/a\u003E) undergrads Eda Kosma, Gillen Heisler, and Kenny Risner spoke on topics ranging from regional alliances, human rights, environmental policy in a rapidly industrializing China, and US-China military cooperation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe discussion was co-led by Sam Nunn Scool of International Affairs \u003Ca title=\u0022Professor John Garver\u0022 href=\u0022http:\/\/www.inta.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/john-w-garver\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EProfessor John Garver\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/english.gdufs.edu.cn\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGuangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) Professor Li Yongning\u003C\/a\u003E. Dr. Garver noted the dialogue\u0027s value and importance of enabling direct interaction as means to enhance understanding of each other\u0027s countries in order to strengthen communication and to establish cooperation and friendship. Both are vital to the development of future Sino-US relations. GDUFS, which is located in southeast China\u0027s Pearl River Delta, hosted and moderated the event.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBeyond the formal discussion, IAML student Kenny Risner reflected that \u0022Having never traveled to China before, I had no idea what to expect when getting the chance to have a face-to-face meeting with some of the nation\u0027s youth. With a China-based future career path in mind, this dialogue was a great opportunity for me to get my first exposure to the country\u0027s youth and their perspectives on US-Chinese relations. Aside from political conversations, I loved getting a first hand account of the true Chinese youth culture and getting to share a few insights of my own.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EAll of the American students were in mainland China as part of Georgia Tech\u0027s summer study abroad program on East Asian Political and Economic Development.
