"Membrane-targeted Probes for Localized Superoxide Detection during Cell"

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced in a number of cell signaling pathways. Characterization of local ROS is essential in elucidating the role of ROS in signaling due to the short half-lives and low concentrations of ROS. Current methods do not differentiate ROS production by membrane-bound NADPH oxidases from other sources. In this work, we have developed a method for detecting local superoxide production at the cell membrane.

"Purification of Cardiomyocytes from Differentiating Human Pluripotent Stem Cells using Molecular Beacons Targeting Cardiomyocyte-specific mRNA"

Studies have shown that differentiated cells must be used for regenerative heart therapies. We hypothesized that mRNA targets could be used as novel targets for high throughput FACS separation to isolate high purity cardiomyocytes. We designed molecular beacons targeting cardiac genes and used them to separate cardiomyocytes from a culture of hESCs or hiPSCs. We generated a >98% pure population of cardiomyocytes from a differentiating culture.

]]> The Graduate and Post-Doc (GaP) Seminar Series is a weekly event of research presentations by two graduate students or post-docs conducting bio-related research.  The series is organized and sponsored by the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB) with additional support from the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. It is held every Wednesday at 12:00pm in IBB 1128 and refreshments are provided. If your research group or department would like to present at future seminars, please contact Manu Platt, PhD.
