{"129021":{"#nid":"129021","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Enroll in TechPrEP and Get a Head Start in Calculus","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Tech Pre-Calculus Enrichment Program (Tech PrEP) is an exciting summer program designed to give entering Tech freshmen an added advantage in successfully completing their introductory calculus courses. Tech PrEP is a non-credit, intensive, residential program that will review fundamental pre-calculus concepts as well as introduce strategies critical for academic success in calculus and other first-year courses. A partnership between Georgia Tech\u0027s Center for Academic Success, School of Mathematics and the Department of Residential Life\u2019s Freshman Experience Program, Tech PrEP is designed to provide an active, social, and relaxed environment with the overall goal of giving new students a head start on their success at Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThere are many benefits to enrolling in Tech PrEP:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EProvides students with 40+ instructional hours on fundamental pre-calculus concepts that are critical to success in MATH 1501 (Calculus I) or MATH 1712 (Survey of Calculus). The concepts covered are based on faculty observations of problems commonly experienced by students in Tech calculus courses and are the common challenges that typically cause some first year students to under-perform at Tech, even though they may have performed well in AP Calculus.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EIntroduces students to the advanced college learning environment including: the lecture format, classroom technology, faculty expectations, college level exams, and faculty evaluation of student performance in the college classroom.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EHelps students develop relationships with peer mentors who are successful Georgia Tech students. Through Peer Led Undergraduate Study (PLUS) sessions, participants will gain an understanding of good study techniques and study skills, as well as participate in collaborative learning activities designed to enhance learning and improve student performance. PLUS sessions will combine \u0022what to study\u0022 with \u0022how to study\u0022 in college.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EProvides Academic Success workshops and programs that will address common topics relevant to first year student success. These workshops will be highly interactive and will include two trips to the Georgia Tech Leadership Challenge Course to develop teamwork and leadership skills.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech PrEP is August 1-10, 2012. Enrollment is limited. Students will move directly into their fall freshman housing assignment. To be eligible, participants must be incoming Georgia Tech first-year students. Students enrolling in either MATH 1501 (Calculus I) or MATH 1712 (Survey of Calculus) are encouraged to register as the program curriculum aligns with course material for these courses. However, students enrolling in any Calculus or Math course are still welcome to enroll. Please note that Tech PrEP is non-credit bearing program.
