{"111191":{"#nid":"111191","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Policy@Tech: A Force Multiplier for Impacting Policy Decisions","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAn important step toward Georgia Tech\u0027s vision for global leadership as the 21st century research university is unfolding under the new \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/research\/policy-at-tech\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EPolicy@Tech\u003C\/a\u003E consortium. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPolicy@Tech brings together more than 60 faculty and leaders from the Institute, colleges, and research centers across campus with a goal of increasing the Institute\u2019s influence on policy decisions that address global challenges. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cBy coalescing these individuals and groups, we have the opportunity to network and to leverage work in priority areas and thus, elevate the Institute\u2019s ability to shape state and national discussions on critical global challenges,\u201d said Susan Cozzens, Professor in the School of Public Policy and Associate Dean for Research Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC). Cozzens facilitates the consortium.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAll of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/research\/policy-at-tech\/partners\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EPolicy@Tech campus partners\u003C\/a\u003E have served in government or on government advisory bodies, so a key strategy is to utilize that \u2018insider\u2019 knowledge. Additionally, the group is working to raise the visibility of Georgia Tech\u2019s policy-related research both interally and externally and to catalyze faculty and student interaction with decision-makers. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Policy@Tech centers are the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cacp.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECenter for Advanced Communications Policy\u003C\/a\u003E (CACP), the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cistp.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECenter for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy\u003C\/a\u003E (CISTP), and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.tpac.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ETechnology Policy and Assessment Center\u003C\/a\u003E (TPAC), all of which are housed in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts; the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.opar.gtri.gatech.edu\/home.do;jsessionid=6889ECFDD3C04E9936F57F8AD0B086A5\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EOffice of Policy Analysis and Research\u003C\/a\u003E (OPAR) in GTRI and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/stip.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EScience, Technology, and Innovation Policy Program\u003C\/a\u003E (STIP) housed in the Enterprise Innovation Institute.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPolicy@Tech launched a campus speaker series last January. The 2011-2012 series kicked off in November with \u003Cstrong\u003EAmy Pritchett\u003C\/strong\u003E speaking on \u201cThe Intersection of Technology and Policy in Aviation Safety\u201d (video available on SmarTech, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/smartech.gatech.edu\/xmlui\/handle\/1853\/42031\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/1853\/42031\u003C\/a\u003E). Pritchett is the David S. Lewis Associate Professor of Cognitive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering Joint Associate Professor Industrial and Systems Engineering, and a former Director of NASA\u0027s Aviation Safety Program. On January 24th, the topic was \u201cBiotechnology and National Security: the Role of the Scientist\/Engineer in Washington.\u201d Speakers were \u003Cstrong\u003EMargaret E. Kosal\u003C\/strong\u003E, Assistant Professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs who served as Science and Technology Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Fellow, and Rob Butera, Professor in the College of Engineering who served in the Department of State\u2019s Office of Chemical and Biological Weapon Threat Reduction as a Jefferson Science Fellow.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EChristine Ries\u003C\/strong\u003E (Economics) spoke\u0026nbsp;February 24th\u0026nbsp;on how to do analysis of tax policy.\u0026nbsp; On\u0026nbsp;March 8th, the series continues with \u003Cstrong\u003EMike Meyer\u003C\/strong\u003E (Civil Engineering) discussing engineers in the world of transportation policy.
