  <title><![CDATA[Georgia Tech Celebrates Engineers Week]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>As one of the most highly respected engineering universities in the world, Georgia Tech will be hosting a variety of activities and events in observance of National Engineers Week, taking place Feb. 19-25. The 61st annual observance is designed to celebrate the achievements, opportunities and ambitions of the engineering community.&nbsp;</p><p>Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering ranks<sup> </sup>fifth
in undergraduate programs and fourth in graduate programs, according to the 2011
edition of America’s Best Colleges by <em>U.S.
News &amp; World Report</em>.&nbsp;The College of Engineering also awards the
largest number of engineering degrees to women and underrepresented minority
students. </p>

<p>Tau Beta Pi, Georgia Tech's engineering honor society, is
organizing the following events:</p><p><em>Monday, February 20 </em></p>

<p><strong>Chalking Competition:
</strong>Students will create an engineering-themed chalk mural on Tech Walkway. To
be eligible for the competition, the student must complete the mural and submit
a picture by 11 a.m..</p>

<p><strong>Engineers Week Fair: </strong>Local
engineering organizations, research professors and student groups related to
engineering will participate in the fair from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tech Walkway. The
goal is to foster new connections between majors and to educate local high school
groups about engineering.</p>

<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong><strong>"Can"-struction:
</strong>Students are asked to bring 10 cans to participate in this event, held from
2 to 3 p.m. on Tech Walkway. The team that builds the most creative and unique
structure out of cans will win. All cans collected will be donated to a local
charity.</p>

<p><em>Tuesday, February 21</em></p>

<p><strong>Skyscraper Structures
Competition:</strong> Using common household supplies, such as paper, popsicle
sticks and tape that will be provided at the event, students will attempt to
make the tallest structure they can in 10 minutes. The event will be held from
11 a.m. to noon in Klaus 1447.</p>

<p><strong>Paper Airplane
Competition</strong>: Students will attempt to build a paper airplane out of
provided materials and compete to see which group’s plane can fly the longest
distance. The event will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. on the top of the hill at
Atlantic/Research Drive, near the Bunger Henry building.</p>

<p><em>Wednesday, February 22</em></p>

<p><strong>Humpty Dumpty Drop</strong>:
Participants will construct a device designed to slow down the fall of an egg
and bring it to the event. Devices may consist of any materials, but may not
involve parachutes or similar devices specifically designed to decrease
terminal velocity or acceleration in free-fall. The drop competition will be
held at 3 p.m. on Calloway Plaza.</p>

<p><em>Thursday, February 23</em></p>

<p><strong>Film Canister Rocket
Competition</strong>: Students will be challenged to make rockets out of a film
canister, Alka-Seltzer tablets, water and other materials that will be
provided, and maximize the launch distance. The event will be held from 11:30
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tech Walkway.</p>

<p><strong>Rubik’s Cube
Competition</strong>: Contestants will compete to see who can complete the Rubik’s
Cube puzzle the fastest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tech Walkway.</p>

<p><em>Friday, February 24</em></p>

<p><strong>Comedy Night: </strong>Four
professional comedians will perform from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Clough
Undergraduate Learning Commons in room 144.</p>]]></body>
