{"109631":{"#nid":"109631","#data":{"type":"news","title":"The International Plan Receives National Recognition!","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech was recently recognized as one of three winners of the Council\nfor Higher Education Accreditation 2012 \u003Cem\u003ECHEA Award for Outstanding\nInstitutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes\u003C\/em\u003E.\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Cem\u003ECHEA Award\u003C\/em\u003E recognizes\nGeorgia Tech\u2019s International Plan which integrates international knowledge and\nexperiences into most undergraduates\u2019 academic majors. The International Plan\ngoes beyond traditional internationalization approaches by tying together\nsecond language proficiency, coursework in international subjects, and\nsignificant international experiences, and by integrating this package into a\nstudent\u2019s academic major to produce graduates able to practice their discipline\nin a global context.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn\na five-year longitudinal study headed by Dr. Jonathan Gordon, Director of the\nGT Office of Assessment, it was found that students in the International Plan\nhave a significant gain in their intercultural development, much more so than\nstudents who just study abroad for one semester or do not go abroad at all.\u0026nbsp; Intercultural competence helps students to develop\ncritical skills needed to succeed in the global environment, such as the ability\nto navigate across boundaries, embrace change, work in a diverse environment, and\ncommunicate effectively. \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Cem\u003ECHEA Award\u003C\/em\u003E was\nestablished in 2005 to recognize institutions that have been exceptional in\ndeveloping and applying evidence of student learning outcomes to improve higher\neducation quality and accountability. A committee selected from higher\neducation institutions, accrediting organizations and the public judged the\nentries on the basis of four award criteria: 1) articulation and evidence of\noutcomes, 2) success with regard to outcomes, 3) information to the public\nabout outcomes and 4) use of outcomes for educational improvement. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe\naward committee was strongly impressed with the strength and creativity of the\nwork of these institutions.
