Gary Smith, president and CEO of Ciena, will share his\nexperiences in dramatically transforming his company against this\nbackdrop, including through periods of economic turmoil and industry consolidation.\u0026nbsp;\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETwice, Ciena\u2019s value plummeted faster and farther than most other\ncompanies\u2019 in other sectors, but today it boasts multiple #1 positions in\nits markets. Leveraging his sales and marketing acumen and an unwavering belief\nthat his small company could be a disruption in the market, Mr. Smith has led\nCiena through some intense economic challenges by taking substantial,\ncalculated risks to establish a well-positioned platform for growth. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESpeaker Bio\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EGary\nB. Smith is president and CEO of Ciena, a global leader in next-generation\ntelecommunications infrastructure that enables high-capacity, intelligent\nnetworks. Under Mr. Smith\u0027s leadership, Ciena has grown from approximately $300\nmillion in annual revenue to nearly $2 billion in annual revenue run rate, with\n#1 market share in next-generation optical networking in North America and #3\nmarket share worldwide. As one of the fastest-growing companies in the sector\nsince 2001, Ciena\u0027s 4,000+ employees serve more than 1,000 customers, including\nmany of the world\u0027s largest telecommunications service providers and cable\noperators, governments, and enterprises. In 2011, recognizing Ciena\u0027s depth of\nexperience and influence in the industry, President Obama appointed Mr. Smith\nto the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EA\ncitizen of both the U.S. and the UK, Mr. Smith has lived on three continents\nand worked extensively on six. Prior to joining Ciena in 1997 to launch its\ninternational business, and leading Worldwide Sales before becoming Chief\nOperating Officer in 1999 and CEO in 2001, Mr. Smith served as vice president for\nSales and Marketing at Intelsat, the world\u0027s leading provider of fixed\nsatellite services; and he served in senior marketing roles at three UK-based\ndata solutions companies.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMr. Smith is also lead outside director for\nCommVault Systems, Inc.; a member of the Board of Directors at Avaya, Inc.; a\ncommissioner of the Global Information Infrastructure Commission; a \u0027Broadband\nAmbassador\u0027 for the Internet Innovation Alliance; and participates in\ninitiatives with the Center for Corporate Innovation. Mr. Smith also previously\nserved as a Board member at the American Electronics Association (now\nTechAmerica). \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMr.\nSmith earned an MBA from Ashridge Management College in the UK.
