REACH targets middle school students, encouraging them\nto stay in school, maintain a certain grade point average and remain crime,\ndrug and behavior-issue free. The governor made the announcement on Tech\nWalkway outside Clough Commons. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe REACH Scholarship continues our\nstate\u2019s ongoing commitment to providing access to higher education for all\nGeorgians, regardless of their income,\u201d said Deal. \u201cThis scholarship will\nreward students for self accountability, promote parent involvement and provide\nmotivation and support \u0026shy;\u0026shy;\u2013 all factors that we know are critical in student\neducational achievement.\u201d\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EREACH Scholars will be selected in\nmiddle school. Students will sign a contract, promise to maintain at least a\n2.5 grade point average and stay out of trouble. They\u2019ll also meet with a\nvolunteer mentor until they graduate from high school. Students who complete\nprogram requirements will receive a renewable yearly tuition scholarship of\n$2,500 to be used at any HOPE-eligible institution. This amount will cover the\naverage gap between other need-based scholarships, such as Pell, and the full\ncost of attendance.\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAt Monday\u2019s press conference, Georgia\nTech agreed to match the scholarship for any REACH Scholars who enroll at the\nInstitute. \n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI want to thank Dr. Peterson and his\nteam for joining our quest to reward those who perform well in school and need\nextra help to ensure they are able to enroll in college,\u201d he said. \u201cI also\nencourage other campus leaders across the state to follow Georgia Tech\u2019s lead\nin making this a successful program for years to come.\u201d\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe REACH Scholarship will be funded\nentirely with private dollars, and a 501(c)3 tax-exempt foundation has been\nestablished to spearhead fundraising efforts.
