Opportunities to Join the Greek Community

There are 55 fraternities and sororities on campus, and naturally, it can seem a little overwhelming to students when they consider the options as they decide which chapter is right for them. The fraternities and sororities at Georgia Tech are broken up into four governing boards, each with their own unique recruitment and membership intake process. The following should help provide a brief overview of each governing board and related upcoming events.

Collegiate Panhellenic Council

The Collegiate Panhellenic Council (CPC) is the governing body for nine national sororities, seven National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities, and two national associate member sororities.

CPC will host formal recruitment for the seven NPC sororities August 14-19. Female students interested in joining an NPC sorority are encouraged to register for formal recruitment as soon as possible. Early registration is encouraged, and those interested in purchasing the Panhellenic Recruitment t-shirt must register and order the t-shirt prior to Thursday, August 6. Registration for formal recruitment is online at www.panhellenic.gatech.edu and will close at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14. Formal membership recruitment only occurs in the fall semester.
The two associate member chapters of the Collegiate Panhellenic Council will host their own recruitment period during the week of August 24. Visit the Associate Member Web site www.panhellenic.gatech.edu to find out more about the specific times, dates, and locations. Associate member recruitment occurs in the fall and spring.

Interfraternity Council

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing board for Tech’s 31 inter/national fraternities. IFC hosts rush August 14-19, and registration is not required. Rush is an informal, relaxed period of time when the chapters host events with free entertainment and food to recruit new members for the fraternity.

IFC encourages interested students to visit as many fraternities as possible. To this end, IFC hosts rush tours on Friday, August 14, from 2:00-5:00 p.m., which gives students and parents the opportunity to visit 10 fraternities. The IFC will host a cook-out at 1:00 p.m. in Peters Parking Deck. While registration is not required for this event, we do ask that students and parents who are interested in taking the tours R.S.V.P. at www.gatechifc.com.

IFC will host the Rush Fair from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, as a part of Fresh Friday, an event for the entire freshman class sponsored by the freshman leadership organizations and IFC. During the Rush Fair, members from all 31 fraternities will occupy tables along Skiles Walkway so interested students can visit a number of chapters in one convenient location. At 8:00 p.m. that night, rush will begin at the various fraternity locations on campus.

Rush will occur from 7:00-11:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, and August 17-19. On Sunday, August 16, IFC will move rush to 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. to allow parents to attend rush with their students. Since many parents will be on campus for Freshman Convocation that evening, this gives parents a time to meet current members, alumni, and parents of current members of the different fraternities. Lunch is provided by the fraternity chapters.

IFC also holds rush in the spring semester with most of the 31 chapters participating.

Multicultural Greek Council

The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is the governing body for seven culturally based or culturally interested fraternities and sororities. The seven chapters of the MGC coordinate and implement their own new member recruitment processes. MGC will host a barbeque on Monday, August 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Curran Parking Deck. Students interested in learning about the MGC fraternities and sororities are encouraged to participate in the barbeque to meet all the members of the MGC chapters and learn about their intake process. Information about the Multicultural Greek Council and its chapters can be found at www.gatechmgc.com.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing body for eight historically African American fraternities and sororities. There are four fraternities and four sororities in NPHC. The eight chapters coordinate and implement their own new member recruitment processes, which is called “membership intake.” NPHC will host a barbeque on Friday, August 21, at 5:00 p.m. in the Curran Parking Deck. Students interested in learning about the NPHC fraternities and sororities are encourage to come out to the barbeque to meet all the members of the NPHC chapters and learn about their intake process. Click here for more information about NPHC and the member chapters.

All students who wish to pursue membership in an NPHC organization must attend a mandatory intake information session where basic information and policies governing intake are covered. Students only have to attend one of these workshops which are offered several times each year. The first workshop for this year will be held on September 1. The time and location of this workshop and future offerings will be posted online at www.greek.gatech.edu.

If you or your student has any questions about the councils or their recruitment and membership intake processes, please contact the Office of Greek Affairs at 404.894.2002 or visit us online at www.greek.gatech.edu. We look forward to meeting you!
