How to Select a Major

Marge Dussich, M.S., NCC, LPC
Associate Director of Career Services

There are several tools available for students, both new and returning, who are deciding on how best to select a major that is right for them. It is highly recommended that students first conduct a thorough self assessment of their strongest and favorite academic areas, interests, personality preferences, values, abilities, skills, and activities they enjoy. Career Services offers several assessment tools to help students explore possible pathways. Currently enrolled students are encouraged to make an appointment with a career counselor to learn more.

The next step would be to gather information on available majors, related careers, and how these opportunities may fit the student’s interests, preferences, and strengths. Students should review the Georgia Tech Catalog and talk with their academic advisors as well as people working in potential career choices. There are also a number of online resources available, including the Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance, the Occupational Outlook Handbook www.bls.gov/oco, and the Georgia Career Information System (www.gcic.peachnet.edu, User Name: gatechcs, Password: gcis1906), as well as other resources available at the Georgia Tech Career Services Library. The annual Georgia Tech Majors Fair on Thursday, October 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is an excellent opportunity for students to meet with academic advisors, faculty, upper classmen, and alumni from all undergraduate degree programs.

Students should also consider taking an introductory course in the major they are considering. In addition, an internship, co-op, part-time, or volunteer work experience can confirm a choice of major as well as potentially lead to full-time employment upon graduation - both of which are very important!

For more information, students can visit the Career Services office, located in the Bill Moore Student Success Center, or visit our Web site at www.career.gatech.edu.
