  <title><![CDATA[Plan Now for Nationally Competitive Scholarships]]></title>

<p>The Georgia Tech campus deadline for several nationally competitive scholarships is in September. We encourage students interested in applying for these awards to use their time during summer to complete the required essay portion of the application. Details for each of the awards are listed below; e-mail <a href="mailto:Karen.adams@provost.gatech.edu">karen.adams@provost.gatech.edu</a> for additional information on these exciting opportunities.
</p>
<p><strong>Open to Seniors and First-year Graduate Students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math:</strong>
</p>
<p>National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships provide $30,000 per year for three years to students for work toward a Ph.D. Students can work on the three required application essays over the summer. Deadlines are first week of November. Applications are available online in August at <a href="http://www.nsfgrfp.org">www.nsfgrfp.org</a>.
</p>
<p><strong>Open to Seniors who are US Citizens with 3.9 GPA and above:</strong>
</p>
<p><em>Rhodes Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.rhodesscholar.org">www.rhodesscholar.org</a>: Winners are awarded between two and three years of study at Oxford. All majors can apply. Applicants must be 24 years of age or under and demonstrate leadership. Campus deadline is September 10.  
</p>
<p><em>Marshall Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.marshallscholarship.org">www.marshallscholarship.org</a>: Winners are awarded between one and three years of study at any university in the United Kingdom. All majors can apply. Applicants must be seniors or have graduated no more than two years previously and demonstrate leadership. Campus deadline is September 10.

<p><em>Churchill Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.winstonchurchillfoundation.org">www.winstonchurchillfoundation.org</a>: Winners are awarded one year of study at Cambridge University. Science, technology, engineering and math majors can apply. Applicants must have U.S. citizenship with senior status, outstanding grades, and ability to demonstrate leadership. Campus deadline is September 10.
</p>
<p><em>Gates Cambridge Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.gatesscholar.org">www.gatesscholar.org</a>: Winners are awarded between two and three years of study at Cambridge University. All majors can apply; both U.S. citizens and international students may apply with senior or masterâs status. Campus deadline is September 10.
</p>
<p><em>Mitchell Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.us-irelandalliance.org/mitchellscholarships">www.us-irelandalliance.org/mitchellscholarships</a>: Winners are awarded 1 year of study at one of nine universities in Ireland. All majors can apply. Applicants must have U.S. citizenship with senior status, outstanding grades, and demonstrate leadership. Campus deadline is September 10.
</p>
<p><strong>Open to Seniors with Ambassador Qualities:</strong>
</p>
<p><em>Fulbright Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html">www.us.fulbrightonline.org</a>: Winners are awarded one year in one of 140 countries in pursuit of international graduate study, research, or English teaching assistantships (ETAs). All majors can apply; applicants must have U.S. citizenship with senior, masterâs or Ph.D. student status and demonstrate ambassador-like qualities. Campus deadline is September 17.

<p><strong>Open to Juniors with 3.9 GPA and above:</strong>
</p>
<p><em>Truman Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.truman.gov">www.truman.gov</a>: Winners are awarded up to $30,000 in funding for graduate school. Applicants should be juniors and show current involvement and plan a career in public service. Campus deadline is January 12, 2011. Students should file their intent to apply with their advisors no later than November 15. <p><strong>Open to Sophomores and Juniors with 3.9 GPA and above:</strong>
</p>
<p>The Georgia Tech campus deadline for Goldwater and Udall awards is January 12, 2011. In preparation of this deadline, interested students should file their intent to apply for these awards with advisers as noted below no later than November 15.
</p>
<p><em>Goldwater Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.act.org/goldwater">www.act.org/goldwater</a>: Winners are awarded $7,500 plus tuition, fees, books, room, and board up to 2 years. Applicants should be of sophomore or junior status doing research in science, technology, engineering, or math. Contact Dr. Jane Weyant, <a href="mailto:jane.weyant@coe.gatech.edu">jane.weyant@coe.gatech.edu</a>, for more information. For feedback specific to the required Goldwater essay, contact Dr. Karen Adams, <a href="mailto:Karen.adams@provost.gatech.edu">karen.adams@provost.gatech.edu</a>.

<p><em>Udall Scholarship</em> <a href="http://www.udall.gov/">www.udall.gov</a>: Winners are awarded up to $5,000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses. Applicants should be of sophomore or junior status and interested/active in environmental issues.
