Andrew Young Plenary Lecture

Primary tabs

Former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young will address freshmen students as part of the Freshman Reading Project. While the event is free of charge, tickets are required and will be available for pickup at the Ferst Center box office and at the Clough Commons desk on the second floor.

This year, freshmen were asked to read Dr. Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches that Changed the World, chosen in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the matriculation of black students at Georgia Tech, and as a shared literary experience for incoming students.

Young, a friend and supporter of King, was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Convention during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. He was elected mayor of Atlanta in 1981 and is noted for increasing minority-owned businesses and scholarship programs for Atlanta Public Schools graduates. Young served two terms as Atlanta mayor.

Other events will take place throughout the semester that correlate with the I Have a Dream reading; check the Freshman Reading Project page for updated event listings and details.
