Audition to win a solo performing opportunity in Georgia Tech Symphony Orchestra's November 2011 concert. The competition is open to vocalists and instrumentalists and will be held on Wed., September 7 at 6:00 pm. All current Georgia Tech students are eligible to enter.

Audition Guidelines, Rules, and Information

1. Students enrolled at Georgia Tech are eligible to audition.
2. Students will be required to audition with an accompanist.
3. Students may secure their own or use the accompanist available at the competition (without rehearsal).
4. Students will be able to sign up for audition times during the second full week of classes on the orchestraboard in the main hall of Couch Building. Auditions will be scheduled in 10-minutetime slots. Each performer should plan their audition so it does not exceed 8 total minutes of playing or singing. Auditions on shorter pieces may result in a slightly shorter time slot, in order toaccommodate all auditionees. (A 5-minute aria may receive only a 7-minute slot, for example).
5. Two copies of the solo part must be provided to the audition committee. One should be an original thatwill be returned to the student, the other may be a photocopy that will be destroyed following thecompetition. If available in the GT music library, an orchestral score should also be provided.
6. Each performer and accompanist should report to the audition site at least 15 minutes prior to thescheduled audition time. Performers should dress appropriately.
7. If a soloist or accompanist is late, the staff accompanist will assist in order to keep the process moving forward.
8. Due to programming limitations, winners may be asked to perform more or less of a given work (i.e.one movement of a multi-movement work). See below for more information. The conductor of thework may or may not be the faculty conductor of the orchestra.8. Vocalists may choose repertoire from either literature designed for concert performance with orchestra,or operatic arias.
9. Memorization for both audition and performance is at the discretion of the performer, though it is strongly encouraged.
10. A soloist may win a performing slot with the orchestra only once during his/her career at GT.
11. An impartial committee will serve as adjudicators. 
12. If a student auditions on a piece that is impractical or inaccessible for the orchestra to perform, but winsa performance slot, they may be asked to perform an alternate work. Due to budget constraints, costwill unfortunately also be a factor, especially for “rental-only” works. Final programming decisionswill be made by the conductor in consultation with the student.

Performance Scheduling

In an effort to diversify and improve the educational experience for both students enrolled in the Orchestra andstudent competition winners, performances will be scheduled on concerts during the 2011-2012 academic year.Internships and co-ops will be taken into consideration.Student winners will perform pieces of no longer than 15 minutes in duration. The committee reserves the right to select multiple student winners if appropriate.  Multiple winners may be scheduled on the same concert or placed on different concerts as programming allows.
