Georgia Tech Library Creates New Desk to Ease Confusion

Primary tabs

Georgia Tech Library’s upcoming renovation project will create a one-stop shop for all circulation and information service needs.

Construction on the new Library Services Desk, which will take the place of the current Information Services Desk located on 1st floor West, Fri., July 15 and concludes Sat., August 20. The Library plans to unveil the new desk at noon Sun., August 21.

“The driving force behind this whole project is to create a one-stop shop service point for our users, because currently we have three different locations for our service points,” said Bing Wang, reference and subject librarian.

During this time, the Library West Commons and Presentation Rehearsal Studio will temporarily close. Multi-media stations and user assistants will be relocated to the Library East Commons (LEC) area. Additional print stations are available in the LEC and 2nd floor West.

“We are constantly referring people back and forth, but after finishing this project we hope we can consolidate all the serve points together so people don’t have to travel all over the place to get what they need,” Wang added.

Wang and five others served on the Combined Service Area Project Task Force, a committee of library staff members tasked with planning this renovation project.

Combining services at one location instead of multiple has become a nationwide trend, according to Head of Research, Instruction & Outreach Services for the Library.

“It has been a progression in most academic libraries to centralize services. Our goal is to eliminate confusion for our users,” said Bruce Henson, head of Research, Instruction & Outreach Services for the Library.
