(March 8, 2007) - A digital film short directed by computing undergraduate Beth York won both first place and the people's choice award at the first annual College of Computing iMovie Competition Red Carpet Premiere and Awards Ceremony held on Friday, March 2, 2007. York and her teammates, Bradley Herrmann, Matt Bigelow, Audrey Southard and Christine Dreas all took home Apple MacBook Pro laptops and $25.

The competition guidelines required student filmmakers to answer the question, "what does 'The New Face of Computing' mean to you?"

The winning video, entitled "Scripted," features a chase sequence, a rap about recursion, and a profile of the director, who is a computer science major, a student assistant and a varsity crew member with a self-proclaimed passion for film.

"It's thrilling to see such a variety of takes on 'The New Face of Computing,'" said College of Computing Director of Diversity and Community Giselle Martin, who sat on a panel of judges comprised of Georgia Tech faculty, administration and media representatives.

"This showcase of creative talent proves that ideas about computing are really changing. It's a discipline that is both coming of age and expanding in more directions than we can list. Today, computing students come from virtually every interest area." Martin said.

Second place winners Joshua Cuneo, Achille Brighton, Shawn Wick, Thao Nguyen and Jeremy Duvall took home Apple iPods for their film showcasing a broad selection of new computing research.

The third place film, a comedy depicting the foiled recruiting efforts of a fictional computing company (Orange, Inc.), got laughs before iPod Shuffles were awarded to the team members, Eric Bolten, Christopher Henderson, Brett Jones, Adeeb Zaer and Anne Schneider..

Teams were given one week from February 13-19 to shoot and edit their films using digital cameras, laptop computers and editing software provided by Apple, Inc. and Campus MovieFest. Prizes were donated by Apple, Inc.

The iMovie Competition Red Carpet Premiere and Awards Ceremony was held in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building on the Georgia Tech campus immediately following the New Face of Computing Symposium. The event was hosted by David Roemer, co-founder and CEO of Ideas United, the company that organizes the international student film competition Campus MovieFest.
