Georgia Tech and Bauder College Collaborate to Present Eco Fashion Show

Primary tabs

Georgia Tech may be the last place you would expect to discover the intersection of fashion and sustainability, but the unusual collaboration will take place on campus as part of Think Green Week.  For the first time ever, Georgia Tech is partnering with Bauder College of Fashion to present a sustainable fashion show featuring vintage, repurposed and couture designs.

The unique fashion event, Throwaway Runway, will take place on Thursday, April 21, from 11 a.m. – noon at the Georgia Tech Student Center.

Student, faculty and staff models from Georgia Tech have been paired with Bauder College stylists and designers who will be transforming gently used clothing into fashionable designs. In addition, the finale of the event will showcase couture designs created from recyclable materials.

Bauder students, under the direction of graduate Whitney Douglas, head stylist for the show, have created 18 different looks for the Vintage Collection. Garments for this collection were obtained from the Salvation Army, Junior League and Value Village. In addition, Bauder students have created twelve designs from existing clothing for the Repurposed Collection.

The grand finale of the show, the Couture Collection, will feature eight original garments designed by Bauder graduates and current students out of recycled materials including upholstery fabric, muslin and magazines.

The goal of Georgia Tech's Think Green Week and Earth Day Celebration is to focus attention on the environment and increase society’s awareness of the world around them. With an annual participation of more than 3,000 people, the event represents one of the largest Earth Day celebrations in the Southeast. The event is free and open to the public, and features 70 exhibitors, eco-friendly giveaways, recycling opportunities, a clothing swap, an office supply exchange, live music and organic popcorn.
