Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to develop the optoelectronic device with seamless integration with soft materials, enabled by stretchable organic photodiodes made of elastomeric bulk-heterojunctions. Organic semiconductors have been engineered to be elastomeric, but elastomeric bulk-heterojunction photoactive layers and their use in photodetector applications have not yet been demonstrated. Our preliminary research for elastomeric bulk-heterojunction photoactive layer shows skin-like mechanical properties, i.e. tensile modulus values in the range of MPa and strain at break of 189%. In addition to having unique skin-like mechanical properties, these materials yield elastomeric organic photodiodes on a rigid substrate with measured electronic noise currents of tens of femtoamperes and noise equivalent power values of tens of picowatts. This presents the potential to integrate complex optoelectronic sensors with soft biological tissues for wearable electronics applications.
