Jessica Deutsch - Metabolomics of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease

Primary tabs

"Since 2014 the novel Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) has appeared along the Florida Reef track, several Caribbean countries, and the U.S. Virgin Islands1,2. While the cause of SCTLD remains unidentified, spread through the water column, transmission through colony contact, and the success of antibiotic treatments in halting lesions in both aquaria and the field implicates involvement of waterborne pathogens3,4. We combine mass-spectrometry based metabolomics and computational tools to identify metabolites from coral species and associated microbes. We have annotated compounds with known antimicrobial and antibiotic properties from putative probiotic bacteria from our collaborators (Dr. Valerie Paul, Smithsonian Marine Station, Fort Pierce, FL). Healthy coral species from the Dry Tortugas region are used to establish baseline healthy metabolome. Finally, preliminary analysis of healthy and diseased corals from Broward County revealed several lipid classes that distinguish between the healthy and diseased state."
