A Fresh Outlook on Computational Geophysics: Applications to Erebus Volcano and L'Aquila Earthquake

The recent decade has seen a flurry of exciting new developments and activities in many fields of science at the intersection of sensor technologies, data analytics and data assimilation. Data science driven innovation will impact scientific communication, education, and research in the geosciences.

I will show examples ranging from volcanology, using Support Vector Machine and Convolutional Neural Networks to process large datasets of Infrared images, to seismology, showing an automatic Jupyter notebook applied to the reconstruction of the 3D fault structure of L'Aquila, Italy, from aftershock hypocenters.
