Dr. Munia Bhaumik discusses her career and offers career advice over dinner.

Munia Bhaumik is Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Comparative Literature at Emory University. She has been a Fellow of the Cornell Society for the Humanities and Melville Society. Her work has also appeared or is forthcoming in Yearbook of Comparative LiteratureDialogos: A Journal of Latino Studies; Mapocho: Revista de HumanidadesUCLA Thinking Gender PapersLeviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies and in the anthology Islam and Postcolonial Discourse: Purity and Hybridity

She is the author of the monograph In Liberty’s Shadow: The Noncitizen in American Letters and Law.

In addition, she is currently working on two book projects: 

1) The Poetry of Politics which engages how the "politics of extinction" impacts early and nineteenth-century American political philosophy; law; and poetry. The manuscript in progress draws from eco-criticism, indigenous studies; translation studies. and critical theory. 

2) The Art of Peace seeks to examine literary, philosophical, and legislative discourses about reconciliation amidst conditions of “perpetual war.” 

Her research and teaching interests also include theories of democracy, citizenship, migration, race, and rights; literature and law; continental and political philosophy; early and nineteenth-century American literature, drawing from a range of scholarship in feminist theory, Native American, African-American, Latino, and hemispheric American studies; critical race theory; translation; and poetry.
