Title: "Data Analytics at Scale: Systems, Platforms, and Applications"

Abstract: 

The availability of data is changing all aspects of human society.  The ability to mine large, heterogeneous data sets for information and behavior, and infer new knowledge and activities is transforming science, business, and national security.  Streaming data and deep neural nets are making actionable, real-time decisions possible.  Processing multiple streams of data collected at the edge is now essential for maintaining business advantages and thwarting adversaries.  A mix of traditional mathematical and database methods are being supplemented with novel graph, machine learning, and AI methods requiring new hardware components, computing systems (Edge, Fog, and Cloud), and software.  Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is one of seventeen national laboratories that manages a broad portfolio of large-scale data analytic research projects for the US Departments of Energy and Defense.  In this talk I will present projects in high-level hardware synthesis, data model convergence, multithreaded runtime systems and libraries, scalable graph platforms, hypergraphs, and knowledge graphs. Application areas include power grid, biological communities, urban infrastructures, event detection, and cyber security.  I will highlight opportunities for collaboration and internships.

Biography: 

Dr. John Feo is a senior manager at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory where he manages a variety of DOD and DOE research project in data analytics, scalable software platforms, and parallel programming models.  The projects are investigating cyber security, critical infrastructures, and transportation systems.  Dr. Feo received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin. He began his career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he managed the Computer Science Group and was the principal investigator of the Sisal Language Project. Dr. Feo then joined Tera Computer Company (now Cray Inc) where he was a principal engineer and product manager for the MTA-1 and MTA-2, the first two generations of the Cray’s multithreaded architecture. He has taken short sabbaticals to work at Sun Microsystem, Microsoft, and Context Relevant. Dr. Feo’s has held academic positions at UC Davis and Washington State University.
