Apply Now to Become a Diversity Ambassador!

Primary tabs

The Office of Student Diversity Programs is now accepting applications for students to serve as Diversity Ambassadors. The ambassador program was started in 2013 to encourage students to assist with Student Diversity initiatives on campus. Each ambassador commits to becoming acclimated with Georgia Tech’s work with diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The program lasts for both the fall and spring semesters, which includes weekly one-hour meetings, training opportunities, workshops, and campus events to learn more about Georgia Tech’s diversity. The first semester is focused on learning more about the resources on campus that serve underrepresented students and marginalized communities as well as having dialogue about topics regarding inclusion and equity.

The second semester is dedicated to implementing their program ideas. Ambassadors are asked to work together to put on at least one program during their time in this role. This allows students who may not be involved in other organizations on campus to build leadership skills including public speaking, teamwork, and learning more about logistical items such as booking meeting rooms and securing funding.

As an ambassador, students can be involved with other aspects of The Office of Student Diversity Programs outside of the Ambassador program. There are opportunities for ambassadors to join the campus-wide Martin Luther King Jr. Campus Celebration Committee and to join as GT1000 Training Leaders for the Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice section. Ambassadors have also shared what they learned with the Cultural and Diversity Affairs Committee under the Student Government Association (SGA). As a result, SGA looks to the Diversity Ambassador program for representatives to conduct diversity trainings because of their knowledge and expertise.

“We love it when students get involved in other parts of campus and share their knowledge in trying to make the campus more inclusive,” said Karen Yiu, Student Diversity Programs Coordinator.

After completing the program, Diversity Ambassadors have the chance to move on to become leaders and trainers within Student Diversity. Previously, ambassadors have been asked to sit on panels and represent Student Diversity as student leaders. President Ángel Cabrera

recently met with a small group of student leaders on campus, including a Diversity Ambassador who served as the voice for Georgia Tech’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. Former ambassadors have also travelled alongside Stephanie Ray, Associate Dean of Students/Director of Diversity Programs, to conduct a diversity training with over 270 staff members in the Dekalb Public Library System.

The benefits of becoming a Diversity Ambassador go beyond the academic environment. Student leaders with a background in campus diversity are more marketable for prospective job opportunities. Not only will the students gain valuable work experience, but they will also have the skills and knowledge to work in global environments. Ambassadors have a greater opportunity to develop their talents and critical thinking skills through the program. Additionally, those who will serve in this capacity will get the experience of building and leading cohesive teams to help achieve Student Diversity’s mission.

“Making meaningful connections about such important topics with our local community was absolutely fun to me,” said Yassin Watson, a former Diversity Ambassador. “Throughout my increasingly lengthy career at GT, I have always maintained that participating in the Diversity Ambassador program was the most important decision I made in my college years. The knowledge I gained was invaluable, but above all, the emphasis on putting people's humanity first is something that has strongly resonated with me even beyond the program. I am so grateful for all of the incredible and inspiring people I have met along the way.”

All students interested in this opportunity and are enrolled for Spring 2019 are encouraged to apply. Applications are due on November 1, 2019, at 5 PM. To learn more about the program and application process, please visit www.diversityprograms.gatech.edu/content/diversity-ambassadors/.
