Tech Launches 3D Campus Environment Demo

Primary tabs

The Imagine Lab in the Georgia Tech College of Architecture, in partnership with the Georgia Tech Library and Information Center, will launch a demo of an interactive, virtual environment of Georgia Tech’s campus in the LEC Performance Space on November 16, 4 pm to 6 pm. The launch event will give the entire Georgia Tech community an opportunity to help envision and articulate the possibilities for a “virtual” Georgia Tech.

In the environment, users can explore a portion of campus on a computer using a mouse and keyboard, similar to other virtual worlds like Second Life. Additionally, multiple users can interact in the environment in real-time, facilitating virtual meetings among multiple parties.

“We are inviting our colleagues and community to help build a powerful virtual environment base that could potentially support and enhance our educational, cultural, research and administrative settings,” said Imagine Lab director Tolek Lesniewski. “We are eager to let students, faculty and staff experience Georgia Tech in a 3D virtual context, and share their own innovative ideas on how this environment could support the Georgia Tech culture of excellence in research and education.”

Some initial possibilities include:

  • Virtual lectures where the Georgia Tech community can attend and participate in live or past discussion
  • Virtual classrooms or galleries where users can explore student work
  • Virtual labs where users can experience current research projects in real-time
  • A multiplayer game that highlights Georgia Tech’s traditions and culture
