No More Eye Rolling: Managing Student Resistance to Learning in the Classroom

Primary tabs

"This is stupid! Why are you making us do this?!” These are words that no instructor wants to hear. And yet it is often the case that as we introduce new practices into our classrooms, some students will express reluctance to engage along with us. You might be wondering: why do students resist learning activities we clearly designed to help them learn? And more importantly, what can we do about it?

In this workshop we'll present a research-based, integrated model of student resistance that will help you think critically about the challenges your students face. We will leverage this model as we work through how to design a learning environment to prevent or minimize student resistance in the first place. We'll discuss types and levels of resistance to help you recognize all forms of the phenomenon. Using real student stories of resistance, we'll explore strategies you can use to manage this resistance to learning when it occurs.

Bring your own stories of student resistance, and join your colleagues for discussion and problem-solving to enhance student learning!
