Innovations in Building and Maintaining Affordable Housing

About the Course:
This course will deal with how cities and communities are responding to the crisis in affordable housing across the US and elsewhere, especially in places where housing affordability is at a critical point (much of California, New York, Seattle). It will provide hands-on skills in determining how real estate portfolios can be structured around affordability and various innovations that have emerged from the public, non-profit, and the private sectors involved in affordable housing delivery. The course will be coordinated by a Janet and Michael Smith-Heimer. Janet Smith-Heimer was the Managing Principal of Bay Area Economics, a firm that she started in 1978. She is a nationally recognized expert in affordable housing, economic development, and public/private partnerships. Dr. Michael Smith-Heimer was co-owner of the John Stewart Company and served progressively as Development Director and CFO for the Company for over 20 years. The John Stewart Company is one of the largest for-profit affordable housing development and management companies in the US. Dr. Michael Smith-Heimer holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley.

Cost:
This course is free of charge and offers 3 CM credits for those working to maintain their AICP status. If you would like to make a donation to the School of City and Regional Planning you may bring a check made out to "Georgia Tech Foundation" on the day of the course or click here for instructions to donate online.

Date and Time:
This is a three day course. CM credit will be offered for completion of the first day of class; however, attendance for the remainder of the course is encouraged.

  • Thursday, November 1 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (This is the portion awarding CM credit.)
  • Friday, November 2 from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 3 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
