October Sport Club of the Month - GT Cycling

Primary tabs

The Georgia Tech (GT) Cycling Club has been in existence since 2001. The club started as a group of people who enjoyed biking and transformed into an award-winning Campus Recreation (CRC) sport club. Join us for a conversation with GT Cycling President and fourth-year biomedical engineering student, Perrin Clavijo.

Q: What makes GT cycling unique?

A: GT Cycling is part of the Southeast Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC) in which we compete against some of the best collegiate teams in the nation. We are currently the only club sport in the conference to host a home race in every discipline. Our team welcomes riders of all skill levels, and each rider has the ability to be competitive, whether you've never raced before or you've been racing for years. While many of our athletes are very involved in racing the collegiate seasons, we also have several riders who only join us for group rides.

Q: When does your season take place and what is your typical schedule?

A:  GT Cycling splits the school year into four seasons. We start out with our track cycling season at the beginning of the year (August- September). Also, from August to October, we have our mountain biking season and from November to December we have our cyclocross season. Finally, from February to April we primarily focus on road cycling.

Q: What is an interesting story you can share about your team?

A: GT Cycling has won the SECCC Club Team Omnium in the road and mountain categories for the past two years! Last mountain season, one particular athlete competed with us for a few events, despite the fact that she was skeptical about racing having never raced before and with little mountain biking experience. In the end, the Club Team Omnium winner came down to her points! If she had not raced with us for just a couple races, we wouldn't have taken home the title!

Q: How can students join?

A: Students can learn more and become a member by coming to our weekly meetings every Monday at 7:30 pm in CRC room 251. Any questions can be emailed to gatechcycling@gmail.com, or reach out to us on Facebook at Georgia Tech Cycling.
