THE DETAIL AND THE PANORAMA

Inspired by photographer Allan Sekula’s maxim, “all one needs to know is the detail and the panorama,” artist Ruth Dusseault has spent decades recording the social, political, and geographic landscape. In this mid-retrospective, her methodologies come to the surface as she explores the city through infrastructure, the internet through ethnography, and everyday reality through everyday utopias.

About Ruth Dusseault

Dusseault is the Kirk Visiting Artist at Agnes Scott College, where she is also one of the inaugural faculty for a graduate program in Writing and Digital Communication. She has a BA in psychology and attended graduate school in journalism before earning her MFA at Florida State University.

Dusseault taught lens-based and site-specific art for more than a decade as Artist in Residence at Georgia Tech's College of Design. She curated exhibitions that merge art and architecture for the District of Columbia Art Center, the Contemporary in Atlanta, and the Carnegie Museum of Art. Her Atlantic Steel Project, which she completed during her time at Georgia Tech, was exhibited in solo by the High Museum, where it is now part of their permanent collection.

She has received more than a dozen awards and recognitions from institutions including Idea Capital, New York Foundation for the Arts, Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs, New York's Artadia Foundation, the Forward Arts Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work is exhibited and collected internationally, with showings at London's Chelsea College of Art, Boston Center for the Arts, New Orleans Museum of Art, Houston Center for Photography, and Bemis Center for the Arts.
