The Institute for Materials will host a one and a half workshop to showcase synchrotron-enabled analytical methods, educate the community on how to gain access to them, and train them on effective experimental design, basics data processing and data interpretation. The particular focus will be on core-hole spectroscopic methods using soft to hard x-rays, particularly x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and the sub-techniques (XANES, EXAFS and NEXAFS). Other related methods that will be discussed will include mean-free-path tuned XPS, XES and ARPES.

Come learn about:

  • Unique capabilities of beamlines at major synchrotron sources.
  • Effective approaches to gaining beamtime access.
  • Examples of quantitative analysis of chemical speciation, element-specific LUMO structure, element-specific local atomic structure: such as bond distance, coordination geometry and coordination number.
  • Best practices in experimental design, and data gathering/processing.

Although not a requirement, please try to bring a PC laptop.

Speakers:

  1. Juergen Thieme, Science Coordinator Imaging & Microscopy Program, NSLS-II, Brookhaven National Laboratory.

  2. Mali Balasubramanian, Physicist, Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory.
  3. Gerald Seidler, Professor, Physics Department, University of  Washington.
  4. Sanjeev Mukerjee, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Northeastern University.
  5. Edward Conrad, Professor, Physics Department, Geogia Tech.
  6. Carsten Sievers, Associate Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Georgia Tech.
  7. Faisal M. Alamgir, Associate professor, Materials Science and Engineering, Georgia Tech.
