Title:  A Method for VLF Remote Sensing of the D-region Ionosphere using an Array of Narrowband Transmitters and Receivers

Abstract:

The objective of the proposed research is to formulate a remote sensing method for inferring the electron density of the D-region ionosphere (60 -90 km altitude) using a large number of narrowband Very Low Frequency (VLF, 3-30 kHz) transmitters and receivers. Past works have been limited to a small number of narrowband VLF transmitters and receivers to infer D-region parameters. The proposed research will result in development of a new approach, the cornerstone of which is an artificial neural network (ANN). Recorded narrowband VLF signals, emanating from VLF transmitters, are the input values for the ANN, while the estimated electron density is the output. Training data for the ANN is generated using an Earth-ionosphere waveguide propagation model, known as Long-Wavelength Propagation Capability (LWPC). Emphasis is placed on profiling the daytime ionosphere, which has a more stable and predictable profile than the nighttime.
