Take Time to Review Lightning Safety Tips

Primary tabs

With summer activities in full swing, Georgia Tech’s Office of Emergency Preparedness encourages the campus community to review lightning safety guidelines.

Lightning kills an average of 58 people and injures approximately 300 others each year.  According to the National Weather Service, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining, about the distance you can hear thunder. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance, so you should seek safe shelter immediately. Additional lightning safety guidelines can be found at the following link: http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/overview.htm.  In addition, information on common lightning myths and realities can be found at http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/myths.htm.
