Title:  Co-simulation and Design of Cyber-physically Secure Smart Grids

Abstract:

The objective of this research in smart grid modeling and simulation are two folds: (1) Developing, proto-typing, testing and evaluating a co-simulation software tool capable of modeling, simulating and assessing smart grid cyber-physical security, (2) Designing an approach for enhancing communications reliability in the smart grid using multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) techniques. This research proposes a co-simulation design framework. Tying the cyber layer and power layer together, we develop cyber-physical security metrics that can be used to monitor the real-time security of the smart grid during a cyber-attack. Cyber-physical security metrics are evaluated to determine and fully characterize different types of cyber-physical attacks. The co-simulator is tested on a 24-Bus, 14-substation cyber-physical power systems test case and verified for performance and functionality. In addition, this research develops approaches that enhance smart grid communications reliability using MIMO techniques for power system protocol application such as the Distributed Frequency Regulation (DFR). Improvements in communications reliability can enhance the efficiency and performance of the DFR algorithm.
