Outstanding Economics Student Award Mr. Zack Dunda
This award is presented to the Economics major that demonstrates not only outstanding scholarship but also service to the School of Economics. The award consists of $300 and a certificate.
Mr. Zack Dunda will graduate in May 2011 with a minor in mathematics focused in probability and statistics. Zack is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the Econ Club, and the marching band. He is Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Glee Club and a volunteer for GT Connect With Tech recruitment program. Zack is a National Merit Scholar, and he interned with Bank of America as a Operations Consultant. Zack’s enthusiasm for Georgia Tech can be seen in both his spirited activities as well as his volunteer and academic endeavors. After graduation, Zack hopes to work as an actuary.

Outstanding Global Economics and Modern Languages Student Award Ms. Lorena Cazares
This award is presented to the Global Economics and Modern Languages major that demonstrates not only outstanding scholarship but also service to the School of Economics and the School of Modern Languages. The award consists of $300 and a certificate.
Ms. Lorena Cazares is a fourth year Economics and German major graduating this May. She is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, and in addition to German and English, speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. Currently, she is researching green energy in Brazil with Professor Usha Nair-Reichert, School of Economics to complete her Undergraduate Research degree designation. During her time at Georgia Tech, Lorena has studied abroad in Milan, Italy and interned in Germany at the Language Institute as a marketing intern. After graduation, Lorena hopes to work towards building an NGO that through developmental economics research can bring together other organizations that will, in unison, foster social change. She is considering graduate school in economics to study the causes of illegal immigration.

Outstanding Economics and International Affairs Student Award Mr. Trey Birch
This award is presented to the Economics and International Affairs major that demonstrates not only outstanding scholarship but also service to the School of Economics and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs. The award consists of $300 and a certificate.
Mr. Trey Birch will graduate this May and plans to work for Teach for America. He has been assigned to South Louisiana for 2 years and will teach special education. After Teach for America, Trey hopes to continue to make an impact on education as a leader for social change. While at Tech, Trey chartered the English Avenue Youth Enrichment Program that works with underprivileged youth. He attended the Oxford Program abroad, and received the Fleet Scholarship to study abroad in Guatemala while he volunteered at the language school. Trey interned abroad at the Allied Irish Bank as a Business Analyst and at home as an intern for the Institute Partnerships Outreach Programs at Georgia Tech. He is a member of ODK, ODE, and the GT Honors Program. Trey’s senior thesis is a study of how drug traffic effects civil war. In addition to this award, Trey is also the Ivan Allen College Legacy Award winner.

Mollie Newton Award for Excellence in Economics Mr. Zach Aten
Named in honor of the late Mollie Newton, this award is presented to the graduating senior who has contributed the most to academic and extracurricular activities in economics. The award consists of $200 and a plaque.
Mr. Zach Aten, Economics major, completed a two semester internship with the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), Global Commerce and International Trade Division. He worked to establish a foreign office for the GDEcD in Beijing, China and completed a study abroad immersion experience at the Bauhaus-Universität-Weimar and the Technische Universität München focusing on German business and German culture. Zach has worked for the School of Economics as an office assistant since the Spring of 2007. He is the President of ODE, former committee member of Employer Relations Committee for the Work Abroad Fair, and former Mentor Program Coordinator for the Georgia Tech Student Foundation Investments Committee. Last year Zach received the Ivan Allen College, Student Advisory Board, “Student Beyond Campus Award” for his participation in a variety of volunteer and internship activities that have taken him from Turkey to China. Zach’s future plans are to work in economic development and pursue studies in Christian ministry.

Omicron Delta Epsilon Outstanding Student Cup Mr. Stephen Brincks and Ms. Yuxi Xiao
Omicron Delta Epsilon and the School of Economics present this award to the student or students who achieve the best overall academic record. The award consists of $150 and a cup.
Mr. Stephen Brincks is a Economics and HTS major with a 4.0 GPA. He received a PURA for his research on “The Cultural Bias on International Trade and Economic Growth.” Stephen also received the Bernard B. Bellon Prize in Historical Studies and the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award for Ivan Allen College. He is a member of ODE and the Georgia Tech Investment Committee. After graduation, Stephen plans to pursue a Ph.D. in finance and become a professor at a top university.
Ms. Yuxi Xiao is a graduate student in the School of Economics and Industrial Systems Engineering. She will graduate in 2010 and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics. She is currently a Graduate Research Assistant working on two research projects including “Economic Growth through Safe, Targeted Infrastructure Investment” with Professor and Chair of the School of Economics, Patrick McCarthy and “China’s Human Capital Measurement and Index Project” with School of Economics Professor Haizheng Li. Yuxi is from Hunan Province, Changsha, China, and obtained her undergraduate degree from Hunan University in 2008.
