7 Ways to Celebrate America’s Birthday in Atlanta

Primary tabs

As Independence Day approaches, there’s an extra day of leisure on the books for the Tech community.

For students, classes will not meet on Monday, July 3, or Tuesday, July 4. For the entire campus community, Georgia Tech is closed July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

For those looking for ways to enjoy the day off without breaking the bank or leaving the Atlanta area, several places around the city provide patriotic ways to enjoy the upcoming weekend and holiday itself.

All Weekend
Friday, June 30
Sunday, July 2
July 2-4
  • Coca-Cola July 4th Fest: Six Flags Over Georgia offers the chance to enjoy select rides before the park opens, plus fireworks every night.
Tuesday, July 4
  • Peachtree Road Race: The world’s largest 10K takes place close to campus, finishing on 10th Street at Piedmont Park. Find a place along the race route to cheer on the nearly 65,000 runners. Runners start just prior to 7 a.m. and will continue to cross the finish line through at least noon. July 4 at the Zoo: Zoo Atlanta offers discounts for members of the armed forces and the chance to offer a salute to Sequoyah, the zoo’s resident bald eagle.
  • Atlanta United vs San Jose Earthquakes: Atlanta’s MLS team hosts its first July 4 celebration on campus at 7 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The team will wear their red and white away jerseys for the match and fireworks will follow.
  • Centennial Olympic Park: Park gates open at 6 p.m., with live music preceding fireworks. You may even be able to find a spot on campus for a view of this show.
  • Decatur Square: Plenty of options for eating, shopping, and walking around the square prior to a fireworks show — and all accessible by MARTA.
  • Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros: The Atlanta Braves host their annual celebration when they take on the Houston Astros at 7:35 p.m. at SunTrust Park. Win or lose, fireworks will follow the game.
