Abstract:

The objective of the proposed research is to enhance three different energy management system applications to address new challenges facing the electric grid of the future. The first challenge is one of big data. To address this, we propose to investigate the impact of the number of sub-problems on the performance of the state estimator. The second challenge is cybersecurity. Thus we propose to study the impact of DoS attacks on both a centralized and decentralized state estimator. The third challenge is faster system dynamics due to the integration of non-dispatchable renewables such as wind and solar. To help operators more quickly understand these faster system dynamics, we propose a novel 3D spatiotemporal visualization approach.
