Primary tabs

Nicole Johnston of Northview High School in Duluth, Georgia is the winner of the 2009 Ivan Allen Jr. Civic Responsibility Essay Contest sponsored by the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech.

The College sponsors the Essay Contest annually to honor the legacy of former Atlanta Mayor Allen, namesake of the college and a man remembered for his social courage, compassion, and leadership during the turbulent civil rights era.

Nicole receives a $500 award for her winning essay and an additional $500 toward her enrollment at Georgia Tech. A Fraebel glass sculpture commemorating the award will reside in the school's trophy case as a permanent marker of Nicole's achievement.

A senior at Northview, Nicole maintains a 4.0 GPA and is a campus leader. Her winning essay described the accomplishments of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to graduate medical school in the United States and a pioneer of American medicine whom Nicole described as, "a revolutionary, a pioneer, and a harbinger of women's rights" who in the "face of adversity and ostracism" paved the way for women to enter a "formerly male dominated field."

Nicole was accompanied at the awards ceremony by her mother and by her teacher, Ms. Lonna Upton.
