Abstract:
The objective of the proposed research is to understand, design, and fabricate low-loss phononic crystal devices with a PnBG at GHz frequencies. In particular, I focus on the hypersonic pillar-based surface phononic crystal devices that are actuated piezoelectrically in a CMOS-compatible platform for signal processing applications in wireless communications. In addition, I investigate membrane phononic crystal devices in silicon nitride (SiN) as a new platform for efficient stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The combination of low-loss traveling photons and long-lasting resonating phonons in the proposed SiN devices paves the way for the demonstration of efficient on-chip SBS devices for applications including microwave photonics and ultra-low-noise lasing.
