Dr. Susan E. Cozzens
Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development

Dr. Susan E. Cozzens is the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development. Dr. Cozzens came to Georgia Tech in 1998 as the Chair of the School of Public Policy, where she is still a professor. She also served as Associate Dean for Research in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. She received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. from Columbia University. Dr. Cozzens’ is a recipient of Rensselaer’s Early Career Award, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

 
Dr. Kim Cobb
Georgia Power Chair, ADVANCE Professor

Kim Cobb’s research uses corals and cave stalagmites to probe the mechanisms of past, present, and future climate change. She received her B.A. from Yale University in 1996, and her Ph.D. in Oceanography from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in 2002. She spent two years at Caltech in the Department of Geological and Planetary Sciences before joining the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2004. Kim has received numerous awards for her research, most notably a NSF CAREER Award in 2007, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2008. She is an Editor for Geophysical Research Letters, sits on the international CLIVAR Pacific Panel, and serves on the Advisory Council for the AAAS Leshner Institute for Public Engagement.

 
Julie Joyce
Sr. Director, HRBP and Employee Relations

Julie Joyce joined Georgia Tech Human Resources as the Sr. Director, Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) and Employee Relations in August 2016. Julie leads a team of HRBPs and Employee Relations Consultants as they provide best-in-class HR strategic consultation and employee relations guidance.

Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Julie worked with Coca-Cola Refreshments where she was an Employee Relations Director leading a team of ER Consultants supporting the U.S. Central Region. She also held positions at Coca-Cola as a HR Business Partner and in Employment Practices providing compliance consultation and support. Prior to that, Julie was a private practice defense attorney with a law firm specializing in labor and employment matters.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. She is also HR Generalist and PHR certified.

 
Kevin Merkel
Senior Director of HR Services
 

Kevin Merkel provides leadership and direction for payroll, compensation and benefits within HR. Kevin is a recent transplant from upstate NY with 25 years of experience in a global Fortune 500 corporation leading teams and implementing global strategic initiatives pertaining to defined plans and contributions, health and welfare, compensation programs, payroll, business reimbursements and corporate card programs. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and an MBA with a focus in general business.
