Abstract

Professor Vadim Silberschmidt is Head of the Mechanics of Advanced Materials (MoAM) Research Group at Loughborough University. The Group carries out multi-disciplinary research into the response of advanced engineering and biological materials to various types of external loading, manufacturing processes and environmental conditions, using a combination of analytical, numerical and experimental techniques. Among the studied materials are composites and nanocomposites, steels, alloys and superalloys, polymers, materials for microelectronics, biological and biomedical materials, sports materials, ceramics and ceramic coatings, polymeric foams, non-woven fabrics, hydrogels and metallic glasses. Different types of loading are analysed: quasi-static loading, fatigue, creep, impact fatigue, thermal cycling and conditions of ultrasonically-assisted machining.

The presentation will provide an overview of the research performed by MoAM and will cover recent developments in the following main research areas:

  • Dynamic loading and impact fatigue
  • Dynamic damage in composites (blast and impact)
  • Ultrasonically-assisted machining
  • Crystal plasticity and DDD for superalloys
  • Mechanics of fibrous networks – nonwovens and hydrogels
  • Mechanics of bones – fracture and adaptation
  • Mechanics of stents
