Creation of the First International Franco-Moroccan Laboratory in the Field of Solar Energy

Primary tabs

An agreement to create the first International Franco-Moroccan Laboratory in the field of solar energy was signed at the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Professional Training, in Rabat, Morocco on January 24, 2017. In addition to dignitaries from the Ministry of Higher Education in Morocco, also present for the ceremony and signing of the agreement were members of all partner institutions including the International University of Rabat (UIR), Mohammed V University, Rabat (UM5R), as well as the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Georgia Tech-Lorraine.

The LIA ATLAS, "Associated Trans-Mediterranean Laboratories for Applications in Solar Energy," is the result of several years of exchanges and discussions between the different partners, and with CNRS and CNRST. It honors the commitment on this subject established during the state visit of Francois Hollande, President of the French Republic, to Morocco, on April 3 and 4, 2013.

This LIA also succeeds in completing the roadmap for Moroccan-French cooperation in Higher Education and Research that was fleshed-out at the high-level meeting between Lahcen Daoudi, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Professional Training of the Kingdom of Morocco, and Geneviève Fioraso, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the French Republic, in Rabat, on December 13, 2012. The steering committee recommended in particular the establishment of LIA and UMI (International Joint Unit) as a means to further strengthen collaborations between the research structures.

Dr. Abdallah Ougazzaden, Director of Georgia Tech-Lorraine, presented an overview of the LIA ATLAS project prior to the signing. Also participating in the signing ceremony was Dr. Paul Voss, Scientific Coordinator, LIA, Georgia Tech-Lorraine, and an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, based at Georgia Tech-Lorraine.
