Topic: Partnering with Community Organizations to Enrich Undergraduate and Graduate Learning: User Interface Design Case Studies
Abstract: Introduction to user interface design courses instruct students on how to build artifacts that are "useful and usable." Undergraduates and graduates are taught the user-centered design process, a set of design techniques and then get to practice what they learn through a group project. In the last 5 years, I have moved to include projects that are anchored to a community organization. These have included The Atlanta Beltline, United Way and recently The Carter Center. In this talk, I will share what I have learned about how this approach benefits the students, the community, the organization and the instructor.
