School of Computer Science's Mary Jean Harrold Memorial Distinguished Lecture: Magdalena Balazinska, “The Myria Big Data Management System and Cloud Service

Primary tabs

Abstract:

Many tools exist today for managing enormous collections of data. An important challenge, however, is that big data management tools must be both fast and easy-to-use.

In this talk, Balazinska will present the Myria system and service that she and her colleagues have developed in the database group at the University of Washington (in collaboration with the eScience Institute).

The service is designed to meet the needs of modern data scientists, focusing on performance and productivity. Balazinska will give an overview of the tool’s design and details on some of its query execution and cloud operation features.

Bio:

Magdalena Balazinska is the Jean Loup Baer Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington.

She is the director of the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Ph.D. Program in Big Data and Data Science and the director of the Advanced Data Science Ph.D. Option. She is also a Senior Data Science Fellow of the University of Washington’s eScience Institute.

In 2016, Balazinska received the inaugural VLDB Women in Database Research Award for being an inspiring role model for women researchers through her significant technical contributions. Balazinska’s contributions also garnered her multiple best paper awards and a collection of accolades from premier tech and science firms, including Google, HP, Microsoft, and the National Science Foundation. In addition, she has received a 10-Year Most Influential Paper Award, an HP Labs Research Innovation Award, and a Rogel Faculty Support Award.

Balazinska’s research interests are in the field of database management systems. Her current research focuses on big data management, scientific data management, and cloud computing. Prior to joining the University of Washington, Balazinska received her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006 and became a Microsoft Research New Faculty Fellow the following year.
