Lunch & Lecture: "German Unification: Are There Any Lessons for Korea?" discussion with Professor Manhak Kwon (Kyung Hee University), Professor Katja Weber (Nunn School) and Professor Taehyun Kim (Nunn School). This event is part of the Korea Initiative Lecture Series. This program is generously funded by the Korea Foundation.

The 1990 unification of East and West Germany did far more than add the 17 million citizens of the German Democratic Republic to the 63 million in the Federal Republic. Experts in Germany and elsewhere underestimated the huge sums involved in restoring the infrastructure of a dilapidated country with huge pollution problems. And some of Germany's neighbors were less than enthusiastic about a unified, stronger German republic. Today, despite some problems tied to unification, the Federal Republic of Germany is one of Europe's leading powers in terms of population and economic capabilities.

Questions to be answered regarding South and North Korea include:

• Why is Korea not reunified yet, while, in many respects, it is similar to Germany?
• Do China and Japan favor a stronger, unified Korea?
• How would China react to US troops on their border?
• Has the German case deterred Korea from seeking unification?

Join us for an interesting discussion.
